MORE THAN ENOUGH

"God is able to make every grace abundant for you... you may have an abundance
for every good work." – 2 Corinthians 9:8

My birthday, August 11, always falls on a "petsa de peligro," a day when money
is running out because payday is still a few days away. One birthday, I only had

P500 so I just invited Mom for merienda at a dimsum house nearby. We ate a
delicious meal with gratitude to the Lord for His blessings. As we stepped out
of the restaurant, a boy who didn't look like a street kid since he was neatly
dressed, begged for some food because his grandma forgot to leave him his
breakfast. I went back into the restaurant to buy him some food.
Back home, my Lolo Juanito paid me a visit for my birthday. But instead of
giving me a gift, he asked if he could have some money for a haircut. How could
I refuse when he rarely asks anything from me? I gladly handed him my last P250.
I was left with only change in my pocket but it was one of the best birthdays
I've had. God taught me that He gives you more than enough and I felt immense
joy in sharing whatever little I had. And guess what? I had a number of
post-birthday celebrations the days after, all for free, charged to the love of
family and friends. Indeed, the Lord cannot be outdone in generosity! Dina
Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
"Generosity is not giving me that which I need more than you do, but it is
giving me that which you need more than I do." (Kahlil Gibran)

Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve You as You deserve, to
give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and

not to seek for rest, to labor and not to seek reward, except that of knowing
that I do Your will. Amen. (St. Ignatius of Loyola)

Paul is speaking about cheerful giving of our money to those in need. He tells
us that God promises that those who are generous will never be in want. How
generous am I with my money, my gifts, my time and my talents in the service of
the Lord? Is there anything more I could or should be giving?

2 Corinthians 9:6-10
6 Brothers and sisters: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and
whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each must do as already
determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8
Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all
things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good
work. 9 As it is written: "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his
righteousness endures forever." 10 The one who supplies seed to the sower and
bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of
your righteousness.

P S A L M

Psalm 112:1-2, 5-6, 7-8, 9
R: Blessed the man who is gracious and lends to those in need.
1 Blessed the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commands. 2
His posterity shall be mighty upon the earth; the upright generation shall be
blessed. (R) 5 Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his
affairs with justice; 6 he shall never be moved; the just man shall be in
everlasting remembrance. (R) 7 An evil report he shall not fear; his heart is
firm, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear till he
looks down upon his foes. (R) 9 Lavishly he gives to the poor; his generosity
shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory. (R)

G O S P E L

St. Lawrence was martyred for his faith in Christ. Dying to ourselves is not
easy. It hurts sometimes to be selfless and loving. Like Jesus though, dying to
ourselves will produce a rich harvest in other people's lives. And the Father
will honor our selflessness. Are we ready to follow the example of St. Lawrence
and, for that matter, Jesus Himself?

John 12:24-26
24 Jesus said to his disciples: "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of
wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it
dies, it produces much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever
hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. 26 Whoever
serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The
Father will honor whoever serves me."

FEAST OF ST. LAWRENCE

Today, the Church honors and celebrates the life of Lawrence, deacon of the
Roman Church in the 3rd century. He was deacon to Pope Sixtus during the
persecution of Emperor Valerian. Lawrence is well known for his acts of kindness

to the poor, widows and those less fortunate. He would often sell even the
sacred vessels in order to have money to give to the poor. He was untiring in
his selflessness and zeal for the anawim of God. Even as Pope Sixtus was being
led away to his execution, Lawrence was eager to follow to the point of death.
He was soon to follow the footsteps of the Vicar of Christ.
Lawrence died to himself in this life and, as Jesus says, produced much fruit.
He was truly a servant to the servant of God. He was the grain of wheat that
fell to the ground, crushed and grounded for the Kingdom. Lawrence is truly
honored by God the Father in the ranks of heaven today. In an egotistic society
that exalts and glorifies self, Lawrence's message speaks loud and clear, a
message we easily reject. The world will convey a contradicting message: to be
selfish, to put yourself before others whatever the cost. However, the message
of Lawrence speaks of life and glory. Jesus says that if anyone wants to serve
Him, let him or her follow. We know what Jesus went through in obedience to the
Father — nothing short of crucifixion.
Let us be willing to follow Jesus wherever He leads us. We have Lawrence to pray

for and encourage us on the road that leads to life and fulfillment. Fr. Brian
Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Will you die to yourself today — your needs, desires and sinful attitudes — in
order to live?

Make my heart firm in You, Lord, trusting in Your steadfast and generous love.
Amen.

St. Acrates, pray for us.

The Warm Filipino Hospitalit y

"The Lord appears to him from afar: With age-old love I have loved you; so I
have kept my mercy toward you." – Jeremiah 31:3

Do you think Filipinos lose their warm hospitality when they change nationality?

I don't think so. My husband and I stayed with Filipino friends who have been in

Canada and the US for more than 20 years and we were recipients of such
wonderful character trait.

Grace is an accountant in Toronto. We didn't even know her before we landed in
Toronto but our niece who was getting married entrusted us to her. She hosted us

for meals, drove for us and brought me to a doctor when I had a bout of
allergies. She was an angel sent by God to take care of me.
Evelyn is a nurse in Chicago. When my allergies did not improve with the
medication from Canada, she had another doctor see me. At their house one night
when I caught the chills, she hugged me with so much warmth. I felt she was my
older sister who had recently passed away and whom I missed.
Through their sincere caring, I felt the love and mercy of God. Through them I
felt the amazing grace of God flow through me. Through them my trust in God was
strengthened. Donna España (donna@homeliving.com.ph)

REFLECTION:
Your next visitor could be Jesus knocking on your door. How will you treat Him?

Lord, You send angels to minister to us in our time of need. Thank You so much
for Your love and mercy.

God has bought you because of His love for you. It is the knowledge of a truth
such as this that gives us the strength and courage to persevere in our service
of the Gospel. God has paid for us with the life of His Son; it is not much to
ask that we give something in return for such generosity.

Jeremiah 31:1-7
1 At that time, says the LORD, I will be the God of all the tribes of Israel,
and they shall be my people. 2 Thus says the LORD: The people that escaped the
sword have found favor in the desert. As Israel comes forward to be given his
rest, 3 the LORD appears to him from afar. "With age-old love I have loved you;
so I have kept my mercy toward you. 4 Again I will restore you, and you shall be

rebuilt, O virgin Israel; carrying your festive tambourines, you shall go forth
dancing with the merrymakers. 5 Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains

of Samaria; those who plant them shall enjoy the fruits. 6 Yes, a day will come
when the watchmen will call out on Mount Ephraim, "Rise up, let us go to Zion,
to the LORD, our God." 7 For thus says the LORD: Shout with joy for Jacob, exult

at the head of the nations; proclaim your praise and say: The LORD has delivered

his people, the remnant of Israel.

P S A L M

Jeremiah 31:10, 11-12ab, 13
R: The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guard his flock.
10 Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, proclaim it on distant coasts, and say:

He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together, he guards them as a shepherd

his flock. (R) 11 The LORD shall ransom Jacob, he shall redeem him from the hand

of his conqueror. 12 Shouting, they shall mount the heights of Zion, they shall
come streaming to the LORD's blessings. (R) 13 Then the virgins shall make merry

and dance, and young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into joy, I

will console and gladden them after their sorrows. (R)

G O S P E L

Today we remember St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests. This man

lived a very simple life spending up to 18 hours a day in the confessional.
People would travel (read walk because they were very poor) from hundreds of
miles away just to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation with him. His holiness
attracted many to him but his fame never distracted him from his ministry. Day
after day he would pray, eat a little and hear confessions. It may sound boring
to you, but it was joy to this man of great faith.

Matthew 15:21-28
21 At that time Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a

Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, "Have pity on me, Lord,
Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon." 23 But he did not say a word

in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, "Send her away, for she
keeps calling out after us." 24 He said in reply, "I was sent only to the lost
sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But the woman came and did him homage, saying,

"Lord, help me." 26 He said in reply, "It is not right to take the food of the
children and throw it to the dogs." 27 She said, "Please, Lord, for even the
dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters." 28 Then Jesus
said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as
you wish." And her daughter was healed from that hour.

EVERLASTING LOVE

We talk about it, we sing about it. We preach about it, we hear about it. We act

upon it — love. It is the topic of television dramas, gossip magazines, and our
daily conversations. Good or bad, it is part of our lives. We have been created
to love because the God of love has created us to be.
Jeremiah is the prophet who reminds the people of God's love, as prophets are
supposed to do, although no one ever seems to pay attention! The Israelites,
driven into exile, experience a loss of hope. They have felt abandoned by their
own country and Jeremiah speaks a message of hope. Challenging and confronting,
nevertheless, hopeful. God reminds the people, through the prophet, that God has

loved them with an everlasting love, an age-old love, and that His affection and

mercy is everlasting, constant and never ending. The prophet reminds the people
of the love of God that will restore and rebuild their lives.
The image is that of the collapsed ruins of a city, totally destroyed and
annihilated. Yet, the truth is that love will prevail. God's love always
prevails. Is it not the same as we meditate on the Cross of Jesus? Seemingly
destroyed, annihilated, and ruined in body, Jesus dies — only to rise again in
all glory and power from the Father. This is the triumph of the love of God.
This is our hope. Are there areas in your life where you feel lost or ruined?
Has sin taken hold of you? Do you feel imprisoned by your faults and failures?
Do you need to be rebuilt and restored? Then trust in the word of the prophet,
"God has loved you with an everlasting love and His affection for you is
constant and never ending." Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Where in my life do I feel abandoned by family, friends or God? What areas of my

life need to be rebuilt and restored in the Lord?

Lord God, Your love is everlasting. May this love heal me and restore me to Your

grace and holiness. Come, Holy Sprit, rebuild my life in grace and strength.
Amen.

St. Lua, pray for us.
