| | Personal Mission I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God's upward calling, in Jesus Christ." – Philippians 3:14 When we hopped into the river raft, we knew there was something different with the boatman paddling our boat. He admitted he was not formally educated, yet there was eloquence in the tone of his voice when he said that, at a young age, he was adopted by an Iroqi Indian woman despite being "white." They lived in a teepee. He then shared about his mission in life: to preserve Mother Nature and the indigenous cultures in the world. For a seemingly "lowly" boatman, he had a lofty mission. He went on to say that during the tourist off-season, he goes to Tibet and India to pursue his goals. I felt so insignificant compared to his aims. I thought that by giving Bible studies and contributing to church work, I was doing enough. I must admit that I'm better at corporate budgeting where we have specific goals than at setting spiritual targets for my own life. I, too, must have specific spiritual goals so that I do not stay mediocre in God's eyes. I must set my spiritual purposes at the same level or even higher than all my other objectives. | | COMPANION | 1st READING God has demonstrated the wonder of His power in the past and He will do so again in our days. All He is looking for to do this is a people who are obedient to His word and humble of heart. He does not want us to take the glory for His work as He knows this will lead to our — not His — destruction. Humility and obedience often go together and are essential components of any work of God. Let us seek to develop them so that we will see God work His will in and through our lives and our community of faith. Isaiah 43:16-21 16 Thus says the LORD, who opens a way in the sea and a path in the mighty waters, 17 who leads out chariots and horsemen, a powerful army, till they lie prostrate together, never to rise, snuffed out and quenched like a wick. 18 Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; 19 See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? In the desert I make a way, in the wasteland, rivers. 20 Wild beasts honor me, jackals and ostriches, for I put water in the desert and rivers in the wasteland for my chosen people to drink, 21 the people whom I formed for myself, that they might announce my praise. P S A L M Psalm 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6 (3) R: The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. 1 When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion, we were like men dreaming. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing. (R) 2nd READING Paul knows the wonder and power of God's love to bring conversion to a person's life because he has experienced it. I thank God for the honesty of Paul in baring the witness of his life in his letters and ministry as it is an inspiration to us all to let go and allow God to do a similar work within us. Paul's ministry is powerful and successful simply because it is built on trust and surrender to the power of God at work in his life. We can have the same level of grace at work in our lives if we are willing to surrender to the depth that Paul did. Philippians 3:8-14 8 Brothers and sisters: I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God, depending on faith 10 to know him and the power of his resurrection and [the] sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death, 11 if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 It is not that I have already taken hold of it or have already attained perfect maturity, but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brothers, I for my part do not consider myself to have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God's upward calling, in Christ Jesus. G O S P E L The story of the woman caught in adultery reminds us of the need to look to our own sins and deal with them before we get too involved in exposing the sins of others or casting judgment upon them. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone," says Jesus. They all walk away slowly. What does this say to us about ourselves? Are we quick to judge others for their sins? How well do we know ourselves, and how well are we dealing with our own sinful ways? John 8:1-11 1 Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. 4 They said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?" 6 They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. 7 But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." 8 Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. 10 Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11 She replied, "No one, sir." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more." my reflections t h i n k : Are we quick to judge others for their sins? | | SABBATH | Familiarity with Jesus We can't choose our family and relatives but we can choose our friends. It is of no wonder then that though we naturally love and value our family and blood relatives, we may be more confident to bare our hearts and souls with choicest friends. Lazarus, Martha and Mary were Jesus' dearest friends. It was in the privacy of their home in Bethany that Jesus many times chose to rest and be simply His natural human self, away from the heat and scrutiny of His critics and from the expectant clamor of the crowd. In our particular Gospel lesson today, we also see how Jesus was very much at home with emotions in Martha's and Mary's presence that He wept. In like manner, Martha and Mary were also very much at home in reflecting with Jesus their sentiments on His delay in coming to visit them, a delay that caused the death of Lazarus. Friendship with Jesus did not save Martha and Mary from the pains, the losses and the harsh realities of earthly existence. This, I believe, is what Jesus wanted Martha and Mary to realize with His intentional delay in coming to the aid of the siblings. Friendship with God does not mean exemption from bad news. Abraham who walked with God, Moses who talked with God face-to-face, and David who had a heart after God's heart had one common human experience: they all died. Friendship with Jesus, like our friendship with our best of friends, however brings along a wonderful benefit: it gives us the confidence to just open wide to Him our thoughts, our emotions, our sentiments just as we have them now. We do not have to always edit ourselves; we do not have to filter our expressions so that we come across always as sublime and in control. We can just let go, and let God. Now, is this not enough to make us feel relaxed and relieved? Of course, should Jesus decide to act in our favor, that is an add-on and much appreciated grace.Fr.
