after poor Harapan feedback

NP-NPC-LDP vice presidential candidate Loren Legarda, together with
her celebrity endorser Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo, encourages
Filipinos to participate in the global event Earth Hour tonight at
8:30 p.m.

Earth Hour is a campaign that started in Sydney, Australia in 2007.
Its aim is to spread awareness of climate change issues. For the past
three years, this global call brought different countries together in
sending a message to world leaders in the lead-up to the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Denmark,
which took place in December 2009. This year, 100 countries have
pledged their support to this event.

"Taun-taon naman, pinapatupad ito sa buong mundo na pinapatay nang
panandalian lamang ang ilaw para makatipid sa kuryente na siyang
nagpapalaganap ng pagbabago ng klima. Kaya sa Earth Hour, 8:30 ng
gabi, ang Luntiang Pilipinas at Philippine Climate Youth Movement ang
siyang magpapatupad ng kontribusyon na shut all lights," said Senator
Legarda at a press conference held this afternoon at Annabel's
Restaurant on Tomas Morato, Quezon City.

In the vice-presidential forum of ABS-CBN called Harapan last Sunday,
March 21, Senator Legarda was questioned by her colleague, Liberal
Party vice presidential candidate Mar Roxas, for being so active in
pushing environmental issues when, in fact, the Philippines is only
one percent of the cause of pollution in the world.

The lone female vice presidential candidate reiterated that it is
important to educate Filipinos about the negative effects of climate
change.

She further explained, "Kasi, maliwanag naman ho na bagamat tayo ay
one percent lang ang kontribusyon sa pagpo-pollute sa mundo, tayo
naman ang pinakanasasalanta, di ba? Naalala niyo naman ang [mga
bagyong] Ondoy at Pepeng, maski nasa middle class, mayayaman o
mahihirap ay namatayan, nabaha, inanod ang lahat [ng] pinagkakakitaan
sa Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Pangasinan. Ngayong panahon
ng El Niño, grabe. Galing ako sa Norte, 200,000 na pamilya ang
[apektado]. Iniinspeksyon ko ang mga taniman, maisan, talagang walang
aanihin.

"Hindi ba nila naiintindihan ang Ondoy, Pepeng, El Niño at iba pang
nangyayari ngayon ay talagang nakakabit sa bituka ang isyu na ito.
Ang nakalulungkot dito, 'yong pinakamahihirap na ang siya pang lalong
maghihirap sa panahon ng El Niño."

HARAPAN ISSUE. Regarding last weekend's Harapan VP debate, Legarda
said that many related to her disappointment when she supposedly
scored low among participating viewers in this forum.

The debate, which was aired live over Channel 2, ANC, Studio 23, and
abs-cbnNEWS.com, utilized the Wireless Audience Response System (WARS)
to get viewer feedback. Randomly-selected citizens in Metro Manila,
Naga, Cebu and Davao were given a gadget, and while watching the
debate could press different buttons to relay if he or she felt the
candidate was being truthful or not after the candidate had answered a
question.

According to the results, the senator had scored poorly.

However, Legarda said she has chosen to ignore last week's incident
and move on with her campaign rallies.

She told the media, "Alam niyo, one week ago 'yon. Ako kasi ang tao
na hindi tumitingin kung ano ang mangyayaring masama, ako'y na-set up
or whatever. Pagpaliban na lang 'yon. Marami o lahat ang hindi
talaga naniwala dahil papaano ba 'yon, ako'y ginawang kulelat, four
percent. Talagang hindi kapani-paniwala.

"Pero ayaw ko nang pahabain at maliwanag ang gusto ko para sa bayan.
Ayaw kong makipag-away sa mga bagay na walang kakuwenta-kuwenta na
hindi magbibigay ng pagkain sa mga tao. Pero ang maliwanag, maraming
hindi naniwala. Pero alam mo, hindi ko sila inaway. Wala, dahil ako,

"Ang importante, I was there in good faith, maganda ang mga sagot ko.
Kung mayroong stratehiya na ginawa sila... Hindi sinabi sa amin na
merong mga live points na puwedeng maghakot ng mga tao, na puwedeng
mag-set. Hindi bale na 'yon. Wala kayong maririnig sa akin. Kung
nag-set up man o hindi, for me, may tao doon, may Diyos sa 'taas, at
may tao sa baba. 'Yan ang maghuhusga sa Mayo 10."

When asked if this was the reason why she and presidential candidate
Manny Villar had declined ABS-CBN's invitation to take part in the
Harapan presidential tandem forum supposedly this Sunday, March 28,
Senator Legarda said it was not.

"Kami ho, hindi naman talaga nag-back out," she said. "Hindi ho
talaga nag-confirm si Senator Manny Villar dahil mayroon po kaming
Bicol major event bukas sa Wowowee sa Naga City. Nandoon na sila
ngayon, e. I skipped today, mayroong Albay and Sorsogon dahil nga sa
presscon namin ni Sarah na matagal nang naka-set. E, bukas mayroong
major rally sa Bicol and Naga. Hindi natin puwedeng biguin ang mga
taga-Bicol. Hindi naman namin bino-boycott, talagang naka-schedule
lang ang Bicol namin. Pero alam ko, yung ibang presidential tandems,
di na rin pupunta."

A young lady took up Nursing to fulfill her dream of going abroad. But try as she might, she flunked the board exams several times. Since she couldn't apply for a nursing job, she applied in an airline company. Having the looks and the height, she qualified as a flight stewardess.
She has been a flight attendant for more than 10 years and is now based in Europe. Her dream of going abroad was fulfilled but not in the way she planned it.
I believe that Mary also has her own dreams: to be a loving wife and mother. God fulfilled her dream but with a twist. She became the mother of God. Mary said yes to God even if she didn't know what lay ahead. She submitted to the will of God and because of her obedience, salvation came to us through her Son, Jesus.
We all have our own plans and dreams. But there are times that things don't go our way and our life takes a different turn. We only need to trust God and allow Him to direct our paths. For He alone knows best. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)

Proverbs 19:21 says, "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the decision of the Lord that endures."

1st READING

God has worked in and through the most insignificant people all through the history of salvation. In fact, apart from Jesus, all the major figures of salvation history have humble and simple beginnings that are transformed by faith into the fulfillment of a promise of God. This is possible for our lives, too. The critical ingredient we supply is a willing and humble heart — just like that of Mary who surrenders all to the will of God.

Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10
10 The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying: 11 "Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!" 12 But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!" 13 Then he said: "Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary men, must you
also weary my God? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel. 8: 10 which means "God is with us!"

2nd READING

It is not the sacrifice of the blood of animals that God wants us to perform but the offering of our own lives in obedience to His will. Do you want to know what God wants from you? Then surrender all to Him and let Him lead you on the journey and adventure of a lifetime.

Hebrews 10:4-10
4 Brothers and sisters: It is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats take away sins. 5 For this reason, when he came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; 6 holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in. 7 Then I said, 'As is written of me
in the scroll, Behold, I come to do your will, O God.' " 8 First he says, "Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in." These are offered according to the law. 9 Then he says, "Behold, I come to do your will." He takes away the first to establish the second. 10 By this "will," we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

G O S P E L

Mary's "yes" will always be the most important affirmative answer in the history of the world. What is the second most important "yes"? That is right, our individual response to the offer of salvation. It may be a very short word but it is a most powerful one when combined with obedience to God's will. Let us seek to give that answer on a daily basis and so become the men and women that God created us to be, living in the fullness of His love all our days.

26 The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! Life is a Cyclone !

Preaching a homily for today is a challenge. We are very much into the season of Lent, when we prepare to celebrate Jesus' passion, death and resurrection. But the liturgy for this day asks us to commemorate the angel's announcement to Mary about her motherhood to Jesus. This makes us think of the joys of Christmas, when nine months from now we will celebrate Jesus' incarnation.
This is life. It is not a defined, layered and laddered experience. Life is a cycle, or more accurately, life is a cyclone: never-ending, simultaneous, overlapping, spiraling, web-like occurrences engaging us altogether. There are no pure moments of joy, as there are no pure times of pain and sorrow. There are wakes and funerals in December; there are baptisms and marriages in March and April. One family mourns as the world watches fireworks during the New Year. Endings easily become beginnings; beginnings are automatic endings of some things. Yes, come to think of it, there are really no real moments of "rests." The cycle and the cyclone
goes on and on.
In the midst of the maddening experiences we have about life, for us Christians, there is one important revelation: Jesus has gone through all our human experiences. In fact, Simeon called Him the "sign of contradiction." His birth was at the same time welcomed by the poor of Yahweh, feared by Herod and his court, questioned by the experts of Jewish Law.
Jesus comes as Immanuel, that is, "God-with-us." Today, this is what matters as we have the liturgy of the Annunciation to Mary. Today, we thank heaven for stepping into our earthly and human affairs. Today, heaven steps into human affairs not by changing everything in an instant, but by simply joining in. Isn't this cool?Fr. In what way is your life today a cyclone? What web-like flow of events and emotions are you going through now? Ask Jesus, Immanuel, to step into your life.

You are calm in the storm. You give joy amidst the sorrow. You are the only One who will always be there. Thank You for being Immanuel.

Energy Efficiency as an Essential Component in Buildings

Green buildings are designed to reduce the environmental and human health impact on the built environment. Green building practices include an emphasis on energy efficiency, which is the foundation of any sustainable building.

In addition, as buildings represent 30-40% of global energy use, energy efficiency in buildings has gained prominence in the pursuit of sustainable development and energy and climate security. Energy efficiency improvements in the building sector present significant opportunity to save energy and money and reduce carbon emissions.

On February 23, 2010, the Alliance to Save Energy hosted a brownbag lunch with the Inter-American Development Bank to discuss the benefits of energy efficiency in different types of buildings, the use of enabling policies and building codes, and necessary investments. It included a tour of the Alliance’s U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Silver-certified office space. Coupled with the organization’s ambitious green power commitment, the office features recycled and rapidly-renewable building materials and furnishings and EnergyStar kitchen appliances.

Welcome
International Team Program Manager Arlene Fetizanan (afetizanan@ase.org) gave an overview of the Alliance to Save Energy’s work with energy efficiency projects related to buildings. Arlene has experience in urban planning and economic development in the US and internationally, and specializes in designing mechanisms and policies to increase energy conservation measures in buildings.
The Importance of Investment in Energy Efficiency in Buildings
Vice President for Programs Jeff Harris (jharris@ase.org) discussed energy efficiency measures in new and existing buildings, as well as cross-cutting techniques for achieving maximum advantages. Jeff’s work focuses on U.S. and international energy efficiency policies for buildings, appliances, and utilities, and market transformation through public sector leadership.
Promoting EE Standards and Technologies
Buildings and Utilities Project Manager Nils Petermann (npettermann@ase.org) presented specific Alliance experience in windows market transformation through the Efficient Windows Collaborative (EWC). Nils directs the EWC, and his expertise includes window energy efficiency standards and technologies as well as analysis of the energy savings achievable through building codes.
Energy Efficiency in Schools
Education Team Vice President Merrilee Harrigan (mharrigan@ase.org) discussed the Alliance’s education initiatives, which improve learning environments and increase students’ awareness about energy efficiency. Merrilee has directed the Alliance’s US and international educational programs for 20 years, designing and researching innovative consumer education, field tests, and pilot projects to reduce energy consumption.
Building Codes Assistance Project (BCAP)
BCAP Executive Director Aleisha Khan (akhan@ase.org) discussed the Alliance’s BCAP experience, as well as international examples to identify favorable markets for green codes. With experience in technical projects and market transformation, Aleisha directs BCAP activities for improving energy performance in residential and commercial buildings through building codes.
Alliance Office LEED Retrofit
Executive Vice President for Programs and Development Brian Castelli (bcastelli@ase.org) explained the process and cost benefits of the LEED-CI Alliance office retrofit. Brain brings nearly 30 years of national and international experience in the energy field, including expertise in energy efficiency, renewables, emission reductions, and electricity demand reduction.

HOW TO TAKE A PICTURE OF A FUTURE PRESIDENT

My boss requires that the magazine I edit come up with good articles so we can increase sales. So I monitor the news, pore over surveys, attend press conferences and media forums, check out gossips even to sniff a scoop.
At the last quarter of 2000, for instance, I already had an inkling that then Vice President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was going to be president of the Philippines by January 2001. I wanted her picture to be on the cover of our issue that would come out on the week that this would happen. My problem was how to get the next president of the republic to sit for a pictorial for our cover. I never did.
But we got our scoop. How did we do it? In December, a few weeks before Edsa 2, we asked Mrs. Arroyo's aides for permission to take her photo after one of her speaking engagements in a restaurant. We went there early, set up our cameras and lights at the lobby, and when Mrs. Arroyo was about to leave, her aides guided her toward our cameras.
I've done many other acrobatics to prove to my boss I am a true blue journalist. Now, as for becoming a true blue disciple of Jesus… well,

Jesus speaks of the nature of truth here in very fundamental terms. Please take time today to reflect on what Jesus is saying and see how it applies to your life. When we speak of truth, we speak of a reality that is unchanging. All truths are the same today as they were yesterday and will be tomorrow. We are not talking about events here, but the fundamental realities that underlie the goodness of life and all that we should do as human beings.

The Problem with Sin

It is a known fact that children are easier to motivate to frequent the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As we age, we struggle to go to confession. we have many alibis: we are busy, or no priest is readily available whenever we are "in the mood" to confess, etc. However, I believe that one great reason for this difficulty of adults is this — we are brought to shame by our sins.
The problem with sin is not sin itself. All – even children – fail, commit mistakes and do sin. The problem with sin is that, as Jesus says, sin makes us slaves. There are sins that become our "favorites" not because we want them, but because they transform themselves into habits that we are often bound to keep doing. These sins are what we may call "vices."
Since we realize that we commit the same sins and do the same mistakes, therefore, we come to the point of embarrassment when we begin to feel uncomfortable going to the same place and the same priest for confession. We may even develop hate for ourselves for being a failure when it comes to transforming our ways. It could even be that everything turns to an overwhelming experience of hopelessness. Scruples and anxieties follow.
There is just one antidote: humility – admitting our human frailty and removing all our pretensions to greatness and perfection. The Jewish leaders found this to be hard. They found it impossible to step down from their ivory towers, the high reputations they have projected for themselves, or false impressions they have allowed the people to think about them. Giving in to such a predicament, the Jewish leaders found it hard to open to contrition and confession especially in the face of others. The Church has always underlined the Christian tenet that we are called to be saints and it is insanity not to strive to be a saint, but along the way we
are always a mix of "saints and sinners." Over all, we need to open ourselves to God's mercy. Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP

Reflection Question:
Go into prayer and make an "awareness list" of sins that enslave you, sins that bring you shame. Pour your heart out to the Lord in sorrow and contrition. Beg Him to heal you from your sin and deliver you from shame.

Father of light, give me the courage to come out from my darkness and come to Your light of truth. Heal me, Lord.

Personal Mission I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God's upward calling, in Jesus Christ." – Philippians 3:14 When we hopped into the river raft, we knew there was something different with the boatman paddling our boat. He admitted he was not formally educated, yet there was eloquence in the tone of his voice when he said that, at a young age, he was adopted by an Iroqi Indian woman despite being "white." They lived in a teepee. He then shared about his mission in life: to preserve Mother Nature and the indigenous cultures in the world. For a seemingly "lowly" boatman, he had a lofty mission. He went on to say that during the tourist off-season, he goes to Tibet and India to pursue his goals. I felt so insignificant compared to his aims. I thought that by giving Bible studies and contributing to church work, I was doing enough. I must admit that I'm better at corporate budgeting where we have specific goals than at setting spiritual targets for my own life. I, too, must have specific spiritual goals so that I do not stay mediocre in God's eyes. I must set my spiritual purposes at the same level or even higher than all my other objectives. All He is looking for to do this is a people who are obedient to His word and humble of heart. He does not want us to take the glory for His work as He knows this will lead to our — not His — destruction. Humility and obedience often go together and are essential components of any work of God. Let us seek to develop them so that we will see God work His will in and through our lives and our community of faith. (R) 2nd READING Paul knows the wonder and power of God's love to bring conversion to a person's life because he has experienced it. I thank God for the honesty of Paul in baring the witness of his life in his letters and ministry as it is an inspiration to us all to let go and allow God to do a similar work within us. Paul's ministry is powerful and successful simply because it is built on trust and surrender to the power of God at work in his life. We can have the same level of grace at work in our lives if we are willing to surrender to the depth that Paul did. Philippians 3:8-14 8 Brothers and sisters: I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God, depending on faith 10 to know him and the power of his resurrection and [the] sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death, 11 if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 It is not that I have already taken hold of it or have already attained perfect maturity, but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brothers, I for my part do not consider myself to have taken possession. G O S P E L The story of the woman caught in adultery reminds us of the need to look to our own sins and deal with them before we get too involved in exposing the sins of others or casting judgment upon them. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone," says Jesus. They all walk away slowly. What does this say to us about ourselves? Are we quick to judge others for their sins? How well do we know ourselves, and how well are we dealing with our own sinful ways? John 8:1-11 1 Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. 4 They said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?" 6 They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. 7 But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." 8 Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. SABBATH
Familiarity with Jesus We can't choose our family and relatives but we can choose our friends. It is of no wonder then that though we naturally love and value our family and blood relatives, we may be more confident to bare our hearts and souls with choicest friends. Lazarus, Martha and Mary were Jesus' dearest friends. It was in the privacy of their home in Bethany that Jesus many times chose to rest and be simply His natural human self, away from the heat and scrutiny of His critics and from the expectant clamor of the crowd. In our particular Gospel lesson today, we also see how Jesus was very much at home with emotions in Martha's and Mary's presence that He wept. In like manner, Martha and Mary were also very much at home in reflecting with Jesus their sentiments on His delay in coming to visit them, a delay that caused the death of Lazarus. Friendship with Jesus did not save Martha and Mary from the pains, the losses and the harsh realities of earthly existence. This, I believe, is what Jesus wanted Martha and Mary to realize with His intentional delay in coming to the aid of the siblings. Friendship with God does not mean exemption from bad news. Abraham who walked with God, Moses who talked with God face-to-face, and David who had a heart after God's heart had one common human experience: they all died. Friendship with Jesus, like our friendship with our best of friends, however brings along a wonderful benefit: it gives us the confidence to just open wide to Him our thoughts, our emotions, our sentiments just as we have them now. We do not have to always edit ourselves; we do not have to filter our expressions so that we come across always as sublime and in control. We can just let go, and let God. Now, is this not enough to make us feel relaxed and relieved? Of course, should Jesus decide to act in our favor, that is an add-on and much appreciated grace.Fr.
