earthly matters

"… The one who is of the earth… speaks of earthly things." – John 3:31

Do you know the newest love interest of Piolo Pascual? How about the latest twist in the telenovelas of the Kapuso and Kapamilya channels?
Aahh… these are earthly matters. No connection whatsoever to my spiritual growth. But you know what? I know of a priest who's so in-the-know with these so called "earthly matters." And he gets people's attention. He makes them laugh as he talks of common things his parishioners easily relate with. And then, slowly, beautifully and masterfully he works his way to the message of the Gospel with his listeners now glued to him.
Jesus spoke of heavenly matters but using "earthly stories." He spoke about sheep, birds, fish, nets, the yeast, the mustard seed and other trivial and common things. People easily related to these things because they were part of their daily, ordinary lives. And then Jesus related them to the Kingdom of God. Beautiful! Masterful!
Talk about earthly matters and end there and, yes, you may just be one worldly person. But talk about these earthly matters because they can lead you to understand God's Kingdom better, then by all means, let's be "worldly."Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you preoccupied with worldly matters just for their own sake or do they lead you to understand God more and bring His message effectively to others?

Lord Jesus, help me to focus my heart, mind and soul on heavenly things, yet see what I have now around me as a means to show You to others more effectively. Amen.

Should the apostles have obeyed the command of the Council? Authority is an interesting reality in that it can be used well or easily abused. The Council honestly thinks it is doing the right thing and yet the apostles know they are the ones doing the right thing. The solution? We have to leave each person to act according to his or her conscience. It is difficult for the authority figure to deal with such a situation as they have to set aside their power and respect the authority of conscience.

Acts 5:27-33
27 When the court officers had brought the Apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them, 28 "We gave you strict orders did we not? to stop teaching in that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man's blood upon us." 29 But Peter and the apostles said in reply, "We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him." 33 When they heard this, they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death.

P S A L M

Psalm 34:2, 9, 17-18, 19-20
R: The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
1 [2] I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. 8 [9] Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. (R) 16 [17] The LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the earth. 17 [18] When the just cry out,
the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. (R) 18 [19] The LORD is close to the broken-hearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. 19 [20] Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all the LORD delivers him. (R)

John the Baptist reminds his listeners that there is a great difference between his ministry and that of Jesus. They are linked and connected but Jesus brings with Him a power from above that takes the ministry to a whole different level and category of faith. As we follow the Gospel let us realize that we follow a divine being and not just a good idea. This is the difference between the ministry of a person and the Son of God.

John 3:31-36
31 The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. 34 For the
one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

my reflections
t h i n k : A s we follow the Gospel, let us realize that we follow a divine being and not just a good idea.

ONLY JESUS HAS COME DOWN FROM HEAVEN

There are many men and women who have claimed to have had some of the secrets of heaven revealed to them but there is only one person who can actually claim to have come from heaven to reveal to us the truth of the Father's love — and that is Jesus. His revelation is unique as He is one with the Father. John the Baptist gets it right when he clearly distinguishes between the two levels of revelation — that of earth and that of heaven.
As we seek to develop in our faith response to Jesus and His call, it is imperative that we give the greater import to the revelation we receive from Jesus and not from any other source. The Church speaks of the revelation of Jesus being definitive; there is nothing stronger or more fully explicative of the nature of God. We need to reflect upon all that Jesus has to say to us about our faith, and make sure that we do not lose sight of the focal point of our faith — Jesus Christ. This is why we say in the doxology (the concluding part of the Eucharist prayer that is normally sung by the priest), "Through him, with him and in him
…" This prayer emphasizes the centrality of Jesus to all we believe and do.
Even if the understanding of the revelation of the Old Testament is carried over into the Christian era, it is at the very least more fully known with greater certainty than before the advent of Jesus. Let us remember that the life of Jesus, His words and deeds, have something to say to every aspect of our lives. If we have difficulty hearing Him speak, it simply means we have to listen more carefully. Jesus holds nothing back from us — He shares everything with us that the Father has given to Him. It is now up to us to respond to this revelation. Fr. Steve
Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How diligent am I in seeking out the wisdom of Jesus for my life and particularly the issues I face in being His disciple?

Jesus, open to me the fullness of life that You offer to all who believe in You and follow Your Word. Let me never doubt that You will reveal to me all that I need to know to be Your disciple.

St. Hunna, pray for us.

Coincidence?

BO'sKFam REPORT

Coincidence?
May I give you some trivia.
Do you know the date of the SEC approval of our Tahanan orphanage?
July 11, 2007.
I find that eerie.
Just in case you don't know, that's my birthday.
But listen to this…
The orphanage started operating before this SEC approval.
The date Tahanan began accepting orphans? May 8, 2007.
Just to inform you, May 8 is my Mom's birthday.
All these were unplanned, believe me.
Here's one more crazy coincidence.
Grace To Be Bornis our ministry for pregnant women in crisis. (We've saved many babies already from abortion!)
We built the Grace To Be Born Center for 6 months.
When it was time to bless the center, the Board of Directors couldn't agree on a date. Everyone's schedule was very busy. But finally, there was one date left when everyone was free: May 8, 2009. So we grabbed it.
And then it hit me—"Hey, that's Mom's birthday!"
Too many coincidences!
I'm now convinced God has a sense of humor.
He likes having fun.
My fantasy?
God must be very pleased with our service for the poorest of the poor!

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez

WE ARE ONE

The community of believers was of one heart and mind. – Acts 4:32

I have an uncle who is a Mormon and a cousin who is a member of Ang Dating Daan. There was a time when we would challenge one another's beliefs during reunions, trying to "convert" one another or at least come up on top in the debate.
No one has ever left the table a winner.
Why?
Instead of focusing on what we commonly believed, such as living upright, praying, giving and loving, we chose to focus on what made us different.
After a while, we realized the futility of arguing. And what do we now focus on during reunions?
Eating heartily and having fun.
Now there is laughter and joy as we catch up with each other's lives. We serve food to one another and honor the presence of our elders. Our children play games and dance and sing.
After all we are family and that is the reason for reunions. It reminds us that we have more sameness than differences.
We can be one, even if we have different beliefs. Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Family, kindness, generosity, love, faith, hope: Look to these similarities that will overshadow any difference.

Lord, may I find common ground to build a loving relationship with those of different beliefs, especially those in my family. Amen.

1st READING

The unity of the Early Christian community was essential to its survival throughout its persecution. If they were divided, they surely would have fallen. Let us learn from their example and be inspired to work together for the sake of the Gospel and the salvation of those who are yet to respond to its call.

Acts 4:32-37
32 The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. 34 There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, 35 and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. 36 Thus Joseph, also named by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated "son of encouragement"), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth, 37 sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the Apostles.

P S A L M

Psalm 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5
R: The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.
1 The LORD is king, in splendor robed; robed is the LORD and girt about with strength. (R) And he has made the world firm, not to be moved. 2 Your throne stands firm from of old; from everlasting you are, O LORD. (R) 5 Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed: holiness befits your house, O LORD,
for length of days. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus refers to both the past and the present in this text when He talks about His being 'lifted up.' The past is a reference to Moses lifting the serpent in the desert and all who looked upon it being healed; the future is a reference to the cross of Jesus and how all who look on the crucified Christ and believe in His love will be saved!

John 3:7b-15
7 Jesus said to Nicodemus: "'You must be born from above.' 8 The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." 9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can this happen?" 10 Jesus answered and said to him, "You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? 11 Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. 12 If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."

my reflections
t h i n k : Let us learn from the example of unity of the Early Christian community and be inspired to work together for the sake of the Gospel and the salvation of those who are yet to respond to its call.

WE MUST STRUGGLE TO BELIEVE WHEN IN DOUBT

Nicodemus will not die wondering. He is giving all that he can in order to understand what Jesus has to say to him in answer to his questions. This is a great example for us. I love to see people pursuing a good object or end with the attitude, "never give up!" It is inspiring to see people with the attitude that there is no mountain too high or chasm too deep that it will stop them from attaining their goal. Remember, St. Paul tells us that God never tests us beyond our strength and that with the Holy Spirit beside us, nothing is impossible.
I can remember the first time I struggled to understand a math concept. I was in my fourth year in high school and we were studying Cartesian diagrams. For one reason or another, I could not grasp the essence of the lesson. I went home and went over the notes in the book and, presto! I understood it as I struggled through the seemingly at first gobbledy-gook of a chapter. However, once I gained the essential insight, the whole lesson fell into place like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle coming together. It was a lesson to me: if at first you do not succeed, try and try again.
This is an attitude we have to bring to our faith understanding or we will often be left wondering what it is the Spirit is trying to say to us. As a child I was often told that the good things in life often only come through struggle and nothing could be truer of my experience of the spiritual life. In fact, if there is not a struggle involved in attaining something, we will never really appreciate it in its fullness as we have not had to work and sacrifice in order to get it. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Nicodemus struggles to come to an understanding of what the Spirit is saying to him. Do I struggle to understand my faith with the same integrity as his?

Father, You call us to eternal life with You. I cannot think of any greater reward for faithfulness than this. Help me to always seek to understand fully the different aspects of my faith.

St. Caradoc, pray for us.

Mind If I Take Off My Shirt?

04/07/2010 8:20 AM
Mark Remy

Yes, you MAY be excused to go wash your eyeballs.
I don't know if you guys ever venture south of RW Daily on the
RunnersWorld.com homepage -- I mean, why on earth would you, when
everything you need is right here? -- but we have a little Opinion
Poll down there.

The current Opinion Poll question: When is it OK to run without a shirt?

It's an excellent question, and one that (to my amazement) I don't
believe we've ever examined here in RW Daily. It's also not nearly as
simple as it might seem at first blush.

So, let's examine it.

First, here's the main problem: Shirtless guys who shouldn't be
shirtless tend not to know they shouldn't be shirtless. Or just don't
care. Why? Because they're the only ones who don't have to see them
shirtless.

Think about it. A physique-challenged man running around without a
shirt is like a motorist driving around with his high-beams on all the
time. It's irritating, and possibly dangerous, to everyone else. But
not to him. He may not even be aware of the problem.

The only difference is that the runner is shooting out not blinding
rays of light, but blinding rays of "gross."

But back to the question. When is it OK for a runner to shuck that
shirt? Here's my own personal list.

OK:
If you have a decent physique.
and
It's really hot outside.
and
You aren't running for any length of time within spitting distance of
people dressed in normal, nonrunning clothes.
and
No one around you reacts with obvious disgust or horror, either
verbally or nonverbally.

NOT OK:
If the temperature is below 45 degrees F. (Even if the cold truly
doesn't bother you, you just look like a jackass.)
or
On the treadmill at the gym.
or
You have a conspicuous third nipple. (Sorry if this is prejudicial. I
can't help it.)
or
During a race. (I mention this in The Runner's Rule Book, the only bit
in the book that addresses shirtless running, which in retrospect was
an oversight.)

What am I missing? Anything?

Polish president killed in plane crash from CNN.com

(CNN) -- Polish President Lech Kaczynski was killed early Saturday
when the plane he was traveling in with his wife and a Polish
delegation crashed at a western Russian airport, according to the
Russian regional governor.

"There are no survivors," said Smolensk Governor Sergey Antufyev,
according to his spokesman.

Eight-nine people died in the plane crash, a Polish Foreign Ministry
official told CNN.

The president, 60, had been traveling with a Polish delegation to
Russia for the 70th anniversary of the massacre of Polish prisoners of
war in the village of Katyn. Some 20,000 Polish officers were executed
there during World War II.

The plane was approaching the airport at Smolensk, Russia -- just a
few miles east of Katyn -- and probably hit some trees at the end of
the runway, Paszkowski said.

Pictures from the scene showed parts of the airplane charred and
strewn through a wooded area. Some pieces, including one of the wheel
wells, were upside-down.

The crash happened around 10:50 a.m. (2:50 a.m. ET) on the outskirts
of the town of Pechorsk, just outside of Smolensk, the Investigation
Committee of the Russian prosecutor's office said in a written
statement on its Web site.

The Tupolev-154 was landing in heavy fog, the committee said.

The chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe expressed his condolences after the crash.

"I offer my deepest condolences to the Polish people and to the
families of those killed in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to
you in this difficult time," said Kanat Saudabayev, who is also the
secretary of state and foreign minister of Kazakhstan.

Kaczynski had been president since December 2005 after he defeated
rival Donald Dusk in the second round of voting.

Crowds gathered in Warsaw to lay flowers and light candles for the
president, whose death raises questions for Poland's government.

"Everything has changed today," said Jan Mikruta, a reporter for TV Polsat.

Mikruta said the government was gathering for a special session
Saturday morning. According to the Polish constitution, he said,
leadership now transfers to Polish Parliament Speaker Bronislaw
Komorowski.

New species 'live without oxygen'
One of the species has been named Spinoloricus Cinzia, after Dr Danovaro's wife

Three species of creature, which are only a millimetre long and
resemble jellyfish encased in shells, were found 2.2 miles (3.5km)
underwater on the ocean floor, 124 miles (200km) off the coast of
Crete, in an area with almost no oxygen.

The animals, named Loriciferans due to their protective layer, or
lorica, were discovered by a team led by Roberto Danovaro from Marche
Polytechnic University in Ancona, Italy.

One of the species has been named Spinoloricus Cinzia, after Dr
Danovaro's wife, while the other two, known as Rugiloricus and
Pliciloricus, have yet to be formally named.

They were found during three expeditions to find life in the sediment
of L'Atlante basin in the Mediterranean, which took place over the
course of a decade.

Professor Danovaro told BBC News bodies of multicellular animals had
been found in sediment from a similarly oxygen-starved area of the
Black Sea, but they were thought to have been carried there from
adjacent oxygenated water.

The species found in the latest expedition were alive, two of them
containing eggs, and though they died on extraction the eggs were
successfully incubated on the ship, and hatched in an oxygen-starved
environment.

The professor said: "It is a real mystery how these creatures are able
to live without oxygen because until now we thought only bacteria
could do this."

Lisa Levin, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, wrote in the
journal BMC Biology that further research into animals that can live
without oxygen could help scientists examining the possibility of
alien life existing on other planets.
