let god wipe away your tears

… God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. – Revelation 7: 17

A lot of things that happened to my life only made sense when I found God.
Before, they just seemed to be unexplainable, unwanted and undesirable events.
My parents separated when I was just a kid. I was sick of epilepsy when I was in high school. My father died when he and my mom were about to reconcile. And a host of painful, traumatic events happened one after the other. The heaviest was when I almost died of a possible incurable disease.
Yet, now I always proclaim, "I have a great life!"
I really do.
Because when I found God, my life changed — from seeing only the sad, ugly and painful things to noticing the happy, beautiful and victorious events that were also happening to me. I just didn't see it until God wiped away my tears.
With God in your life, the tears from your eyes will be tears of hope, peace and joy! Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you shedding tears of sorrow and pain, anger and bitterness? Let God wipe them away. Today.

Lord God, I offer to You my past. Let me live in the present in Your Presence! And let me be excited about the glorious future You have for me forever. Amen.

1st READING

The Gospel is beginning to take root in the Gentile community as well as among the Jews. This will become a challenge for the Early Church as they try to discern how the Gospel is to be lived by those who have not come from a Jewish background. Although faith is the key, this understanding was still being developed — the Gospels were not yet written. Slowly the Traditions and Doctrine of the Christian Faith begin to develop and solidify in the community of the faithful.

Acts 13:14, 43-52
14 Paul and Barnabas continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia. On the sabbath they entered the synagogue and took their seats. 43 After the congregation had dispersed, many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God. 44 On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. 46 Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.' " 48 The Gentiles were delighted when they
heard this and
glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, 49 and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region. 50 The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. 51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. 52 The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy
Spirit.

P S A L M

Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5
R: We are his people, the sheep of his flock.
1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; 2 serve the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful song. (R) 3 Know that the LORD is God; he made us, his we are; his people, the flock he tends. (R) 5 The LORD is good: his kindness endures forever, and his faithfulness, to all generations. (R)

2nd READING

In heaven there will be no more sorrow. We will all be happily praising God together. This is the life for which God has created us. Boring? Self-absorbed on the part of God? Not really. In praising God, the reason for our being, we will be brought to true fulfillment.

Revelation 7:9, 14b-17
9 I, John, had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 14 Then one of the elders said to me, "These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 "For this reason they stand before God's throne and worship him day
and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them. 17 For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

G O S P E L

Listening to the voice of the Good Shepherd is critical for a disciple. Only when we obey His Word and calling will we graze on green pastures and discover the fullest meaning of life. We may be able to get part of the way all on our own, but deep down inside something will always be missing when we are not living in obedience to God's Word.

John 10:27-30
27 Jesus said: "My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand. 30 The Father and I are one."

my reflections
t h i n k : Only when we obey His Word and calling will we graze on green pastures and discover the fullest meaning of life.

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY

The fourth Sunday of Easter is always Good Shepherd Sunday. We are invited to reflect upon the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and we as His sheep. This is a very important image from the point of view of God as the sheep are totally dependent upon the shepherd for their care. It is the shepherd who leads them to good pasture and to water, and protects them from wild animals and thieves. The same is true in our spiritual lives — we will never find true contentment and satisfaction apart from allowing Jesus to guide us into the arms of our loving Father in Heaven.
The opening line of the Gospel today captures a very important aspect of the shepherd-sheep relationship. It speaks of the sheep listening to the voice of their shepherd. In reality, the sheep are able to distinguish the voice of their shepherd from all the other foreign voices that may be giving instructions at any one time. It is that voice they follow; it is that voice that they trust.
We, too, must become adept at distinguishing between the voice of God and the many other voices in the world that could lead us astray. It takes time and effort on our part to learn to recognize the voice of God in the midst of the maelstrom of voices we encounter every day. It is a matter of life and death that we are able to do this or we will find ourselves developing a life plan that leads us away from eternal life rather than closer to it.
In his Letter to the Colossians, Paul warns them to avoid the empty philosophies of the world (Colossians 2:8-9) and thus place their lives under the grace of God and His wisdom — a wisdom and truth that lead to everlasting life. We have choices to make in our lives and surely they have consequences — and sometimes the consequences could lead to either eternal life or eternal death. Let us pray for the wisdom and grace to listen to the right voices and to be guided well in making our life choices.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Which are the voices I give authority to in my life? Are they voices that guide me along the path of eternal life or are they more concerned with matters of this world?

Jesus, help me to learn to recognize Your voice and that of the Father and the Holy Spirit so that I will be guided well in all my actions.

Blessed William Marsden, pray for us.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HEALING

He gave her his hand and raised her up. – Acts 9: 41

Jean has made it her mission to help cancer patients. Her parents, father-in-law and, more recently, her husband passed away with the same illness. She now uses her own experiences to comfort others who are in a similar situation.
She goes out of her way to counsel those who are terminally ill. She listens. She cries with them. Her presence eases the pain and suffering. Moreover, she helps prepare them for what is to come.
Many are in denial. Some are angry. Others bargain with God. Still others just give in to hopelessness and say, "I don't care anymore." Jean helps them through these stages. She should know. She went through the same.
She is an avenue of non-physical miracles: relationships with God are restored; emotional needs are understood; and prayer life is re-discovered. The promise of heaven for those who are about to face death renews their spiritual life.
God made Jean an instrument for a different kind of healing.
What kind of healing can you give to the world?Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:

Peter works extraordinary miracles in the name of Jesus. Let us pray for a reawakening of the gift of miracles in the Church today so that we will see more of this incredible power God makes available through faith. The gifts of the Spirit are for all people of all time; they were not just given in order to get the Church started. How could God give something so powerful and blessed for only a few generations and not for the rest of history? He gives His all at all times in order that we may be saved and become His disciples.

Acts 9:31-42
31 The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers. 32 As Peter was passing through every region, he went down to the holy ones living in Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been confined to bed for eight years, for he was paralyzed. 34 Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed." He got up at once. 35 And all the inhabitants of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. 36 Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which translated means Dorcas). She was completely occupied with good deeds and almsgiving. 37 Now during those days she fell sick and died, so after washing her, they laid her out
in a room upstairs. 38 Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, "Please come to us without delay." 39 So Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs where all the widows came to him weeping and showing him the tunics and cloaks that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40 Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to her body and said,
"Tabitha, rise up." She opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. 41 He gave her his hand and raised her up, and when he had called the holy ones and the widows, he presented her alive. 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many came to believe in the Lord.

P S A L M
Psalm 116:12-13, 14-15, 16-17
R: How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me?
12 How shall I make a return to the LORD for all the good he has done for me? 13 The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the LORD. (R) 14 My vows to the LORD I will pay in the presence of all his people. 15 Precious in the eyes of the LORD is the death of
his faithful ones. (R) 16 O LORD, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your handmaid; you have loosed my bonds. 17 To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the LORD. (R)

G O S P E L

Many of Jesus' disciples leave Him. This indicates that there has been a real struggle to understand this teaching. It is not just symbolic talk that we are dealing with here. Jesus talks in the present active tense meaning what He is saying "is." Only a literal understanding of the text with a sacramental twist to that understanding will suffice to hold its true meaning.

John 6:60-69
60 Many of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" 61 Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? 62 What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the spirit that gives life,
while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. 65 And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." 66 As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. 67 Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."

my reflections
think: Let us pray for a reawakening of the gift of miracles in the Church today so that we will see more of this incredible power God makes available through faith.

LORD, TO WHOM WILL WE GO?

The question with which Peter responds to Jesus' own question if they, His apostles, would stay or leave, is one that we would do well to ponder every time we think about abandoning our faith for anything else. It is the most sobering of all questions as the answer is frighteningly stark. If Jesus is not the answer, then God help us, if there is a God. To abandon faith in Christ is really to abandon the understanding that there is a God because if Jesus, the one sent by the Father to redeem humanity, is not worthy of being followed and obeyed, it is impossible to conceive of a better option!
Yes, people reject belief in God all the time these days but I tend to think that a lot of them are rejecting a particular concept of God they have constructed that is not worthy of belief in the first place. To have full knowledge of God, of who He is and what He offers us, and then reject Him, is virtually inconceivable to me. There are people who seem to walk this path as well, but they are very few and their salvation is in grave doubt. It is not a path to be recommended to or by anyone.
Peter's answer tells us that deep down, he and the other disciples have realized that there is something in their faith in Jesus that has become irrefutable to them and they are willing to stake their lives on it. And they will, as the opportunity for martyrdom arises in all of their lives except John. We capture here something of the essence of faith — that it is a relationship with a living person, God. It is neither an abstract concept nor an optional extra for our lives. Faith is essential to our humanity and until we discover it personally there will always be a type of restlessness within. It is quite easy to see this restlessness
within the lives of so-called atheists; how I wish it were just as easy to be able to reveal it to them and show them the solution. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
What part does faith play in my life? Have I really given over everything I am to my faith response to God or do I still seek to control certain aspects of my life?

Father, You have created us to be in relationship with You and we will be restless until we respond in faith to Your love.

St. Egbert, pray for us.

HEARING AND LEARNING

"Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from Him comes to me." – John 6:45b

I was invited to attend a Gender Sensitivity Seminar by a nun. Most of the participants were nuns from different congregations. On the third day, when we prayed the Lord's Prayer, instead of saying "Our Father," they changed it to "Our Mother."
After the prayer service I reacted to it. What they said revealed to me one thing. I was with a feminist group. I told a priest about my "discovery" after the seminar and he confirmed that they were rebel nuns. No one can discount the fact that these "religious" people heard the Lord's teachings. Apparently, it's one thing to "hear the Father" and another thing to "learn" from the Father.
Today's Gospel is very explicit. "Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me" (italics mine).
The Lord teaches us many things through His Word, but only if we truly grow and learn from them do we come to Jesus.Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do I open my heart and mind to the Spirit so that I learn and grow from His teachings? Or do I listen to Him with a prejudiced heart?

Lord, please instill in me a pure heart, free from all biases and human needs that can stand in the way of Your expectations from me. As I listen to You, guide me towards Your truth. Guide me towards You. Amen.

The Holy Spirit is free to do whatever He wants. His power is beyond anything we can imagine. Yet we know He will exercise it only in the service of the Gospel. Let us learn to call on the power of the Holy Spirit to help us in our works of evangelization. We are not working alone. He is always with us waiting for us to ask for His help.

Acts 8:26-40
26 The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, "Get up and head south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, the desert route." 27 So he got up and set out. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, that is, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury, who had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and was returning home. Seated in his chariot, he was reading the
prophet Isaiah. 29 The Spirit said to Philip, "Go and join up with that chariot." 30 Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" 31 He replied, "How can I, unless someone instructs me?" So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him. 32 This was the scripture passage he was reading: "Like
a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 33 In [his] humiliation justice was denied him. Who will tell of his posterity? For his life is taken from the earth." 34 Then the eunuch said to Philip in reply, "I beg you, about whom is the prophet saying this? About himself, or about someone else?" 35 Then Philip opened his mouth and, beginning with this scripture passage, he proclaimed Jesus to him. 36 As they traveled along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "Look, there is water. What is to prevent my being baptized?" [37] 37 38 Then he ordered the chariot to stop, and Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 When they came out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, but continued on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip came to Azotus, and went about proclaiming the good news to all
the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Psalm 66:8-9, 16-17, 20
R: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
8 Bless our God, you peoples, loudly sound his praise; 9 he has given life to our souls, and has not let our feet slip. (R) 16 Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has done for me. 17 When I appealed to him in words, praise was on the tip of my tongue. (R) 20 Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer or his kindness! (R)

G O S P E L

The work of the Father and Son, while distinct, are indivisible. What does this mean? It simply means that without each other their efforts would not amount to much, if anything. Alone, the work of salvation is incomplete. With the Holy Spirit there is nothing lacking in the provision for our salvation.

John 6:44-51
44 Jesus said to the crowds: "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; 50 this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and
the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

THE GOSPEL DEMANDS A RESPONSE

One of the important points we can reflect on in this story is how Philip acts immediately upon the response of the person with whom he is sharing the Gospel. He stops the coach and they find a body of water and he baptizes him. Personally I believe that the Gospel demands a response from those who hear it. At the very least, when we read the Gospel we must give assent to its truth and maybe have to go further than simple intellectual assent. To delay responding to a call from the Gospel because it might be inconvenient or embarrassing is to risk losing a moment of grace in our lives. This would be very unfortunate.
Similarly, when we hear a call to respond to God's grace in our lives in a particular way, we should not delay in doing so as we might be risking the way that the grace would work. It is important for us to "move with the Spirit of God" when He is working in our lives. If we don't, the Spirit will lose immediate contact with us as He moves on with the plan of God. It is we who will lose the most from our reluctance to obey when called.
God's grace does not hover around us waiting for us to respond in our own good time. God moves on with His plan whether we want to be a part of it or not, whether we are willing to move in time with Him or not. Unfortunately we will often discover at a later date what might have been if only we had responded earlier! "What ifs" are scattered along the way of the lives of those who seek comfort over obedience.
There are times when we have to simply trust in God's goodness and throw a bit of caution to the wind. There is a time for prudence and preparation; there is also a time for adventure and trust. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
When was the last time you took a risk in responding to what you believed God was calling you to do in a particular situation?

Holy Spirit, give me the wisdom to know when to hold back and be cautious, and when to trust in God and live the adventure of faith.

St. Miles, pray for us.

Dapat makapasok ka sa UP, Ateneo, La Salle , o UST, AdU, Mapua or PUP.

LEARN.Huwag kang matakot matuto.

NO TO FREEBIES

"You are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves were filled." – John 6:26

I'm often given "freebies" such as free dinner, a fully-paid airfare or gift items, usually as an incentive for me to get a credit card or join a seminar where they sell membership for hotels.
I used to take advantage of such offers until I realized that I cancel the credit card anyway and end up not buying the membership. After a while, the freebies lost their appeal and I now prefer to turn them all down.
Jesus knew very well that pleasing the crowd is not the way to elicit faith. He recognized that they are after Him not because they believe in Him, but only because of what He can provide for them. It's such a shame that people do not realize that by taking the time to listen and accept Jesus, they would gain the richness of His kingdom and not just plain bread and fish.
Similarly, our faith should not be dependent on signs and wonders. Like the freebies, they might someday cease to be interesting and we'll be much poorer for losing the message that the Giver is sharing. Cecilia Lim (cez_lim@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
When you look at the signs, are you getting the message?

Lord, nourish us with food that endures for eternal life.

1st READING

It is difficult to refute the truth. I remember as a student I liked taking the contrary position in class discussions as it was fun to fight and argue against the obvious. Classes would have been boring without this challenge. However, this is not an advisable course to take when dealing with the Gospel. The truth of the Gospel is the truth of life and salvation and nothing good will be gained by challenging it for the sake of pure argument.

Acts 6:8-15
8 Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen, 10 but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke. 11 Then they instigated some men to say, "We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God." 12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13 They presented false witnesses who testified, "This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law. 14 For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs
that Moses handed down to us." 15 All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

P S A L M

Psalm 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30
R: Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!
23 Though princes meet and talk against me, your servant meditates on your statutes. 24 Yes, your decrees are my delight; they are my counselors. (R) 26 I declared my ways, and you answered me; teach me your statutes. 27 Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate
on your wondrous deeds. (R) 29 Remove from me the way of falsehood, and favor me with your law. 30 The way of truth I have chosen; I have set your ordinances before me. (R)

G O S P E L
What motivates our spiritual lives? What do we want to get out of them? A simple question to answer but I dare say our motives are fairly mixed up with all sorts of desires and wants that are based in the world rather than heaven. If this be true, let us own up to it and seek purification so as to not confuse our motives in loving God with the things of the world.

John 6:22-29
22 [After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.] The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. 23 Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither
Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" 26 Jesus answered them and said, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.
For on him the Father, God, has set his seal." 28 So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?" 29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent."

my reflections

DESTROYING A GOOD MAN'S REPUTATION

The destruction of a person's good reputation is a terribly cynical action to be involved in. It is totally repulsive that anyone would seek to destroy another person's good reputation simply because they do not share what he believes. Sure, enter into a debate about ideas with that person, but do not attack the dignity of the person. Stephen is a good man trying to respond to the Gospel call of love by preaching and living the Good News. However, he runs into opposition with the leading Jews of his time and they set out not only to destroy him but kill him.
Martyrdom for the sake of the Gospel always takes on this sort of structure — the unjust and violent persecution of the innocent. The Church teaches that every human person has an innate right to their own opinion about spiritual matters. It is something that flows from their human dignity and it is perfectly legitimate to argue with someone about their beliefs so long as we respect their right to hold to what they believe in. In fact, we must defend their right to this.
In the past, neither the Church nor general society has managed to universally respect this right. There are many examples of forced conversions to the faith. Such a program does not ultimately bear good fruit. We cannot change what happened in the past but we can seek to ensure that it never again happens in the future. We must respect a person's right to freedom of faith and religion. Of course, this does not mean we have to accept everything that is done in the name of religion. For example, if someone supports abortion because it is a part of their religion, we do not have to support their
implementation of such a belief. Indeed we are morally obliged to counter it as best as we can. Freedom to believe what we believe does not override the Natural Law.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I tend to attack the person when they disagree with me or my ideas/beliefs?

Holy Spirit, open my heart to a true understanding of the dignity of the human person so that I will always give due respect to the fact that all people are made in Your image and likeness.

St. Anthony of Pavoni, pray for us.

earthly matters

"… The one who is of the earth… speaks of earthly things." – John 3:31

Do you know the newest love interest of Piolo Pascual? How about the latest twist in the telenovelas of the Kapuso and Kapamilya channels?
Aahh… these are earthly matters. No connection whatsoever to my spiritual growth. But you know what? I know of a priest who's so in-the-know with these so called "earthly matters." And he gets people's attention. He makes them laugh as he talks of common things his parishioners easily relate with. And then, slowly, beautifully and masterfully he works his way to the message of the Gospel with his listeners now glued to him.
Jesus spoke of heavenly matters but using "earthly stories." He spoke about sheep, birds, fish, nets, the yeast, the mustard seed and other trivial and common things. People easily related to these things because they were part of their daily, ordinary lives. And then Jesus related them to the Kingdom of God. Beautiful! Masterful!
Talk about earthly matters and end there and, yes, you may just be one worldly person. But talk about these earthly matters because they can lead you to understand God's Kingdom better, then by all means, let's be "worldly."Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you preoccupied with worldly matters just for their own sake or do they lead you to understand God more and bring His message effectively to others?

Lord Jesus, help me to focus my heart, mind and soul on heavenly things, yet see what I have now around me as a means to show You to others more effectively. Amen.

Should the apostles have obeyed the command of the Council? Authority is an interesting reality in that it can be used well or easily abused. The Council honestly thinks it is doing the right thing and yet the apostles know they are the ones doing the right thing. The solution? We have to leave each person to act according to his or her conscience. It is difficult for the authority figure to deal with such a situation as they have to set aside their power and respect the authority of conscience.

Acts 5:27-33
27 When the court officers had brought the Apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them, 28 "We gave you strict orders did we not? to stop teaching in that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man's blood upon us." 29 But Peter and the apostles said in reply, "We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him." 33 When they heard this, they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death.

Psalm 34:2, 9, 17-18, 19-20
R: The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
1 [2] I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. 8 [9] Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. (R) 16 [17] The LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the earth. 17 [18] When the just cry out,
the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. (R) 18 [19] The LORD is close to the broken-hearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. 19 [20] Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all the LORD delivers him. (R)

John the Baptist reminds his listeners that there is a great difference between his ministry and that of Jesus. They are linked and connected but Jesus brings with Him a power from above that takes the ministry to a whole different level and category of faith. As we follow the Gospel let us realize that we follow a divine being and not just a good idea. This is the difference between the ministry of a person and the Son of God.

John 3:31-36
31 The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. 34 For the
one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

my reflections
t h i n k : A s we follow the Gospel, let us realize that we follow a divine being and not just a good idea.

ONLY JESUS HAS COME DOWN FROM HEAVEN

There are many men and women who have claimed to have had some of the secrets of heaven revealed to them but there is only one person who can actually claim to have come from heaven to reveal to us the truth of the Father's love — and that is Jesus. His revelation is unique as He is one with the Father. John the Baptist gets it right when he clearly distinguishes between the two levels of revelation — that of earth and that of heaven.
As we seek to develop in our faith response to Jesus and His call, it is imperative that we give the greater import to the revelation we receive from Jesus and not from any other source. The Church speaks of the revelation of Jesus being definitive; there is nothing stronger or more fully explicative of the nature of God. We need to reflect upon all that Jesus has to say to us about our faith, and make sure that we do not lose sight of the focal point of our faith — Jesus Christ. This is why we say in the doxology (the concluding part of the Eucharist prayer that is normally sung by the priest), "Through him, with him and in him
…" This prayer emphasizes the centrality of Jesus to all we believe and do.
Even if the understanding of the revelation of the Old Testament is carried over into the Christian era, it is at the very least more fully known with greater certainty than before the advent of Jesus. Let us remember that the life of Jesus, His words and deeds, have something to say to every aspect of our lives. If we have difficulty hearing Him speak, it simply means we have to listen more carefully. Jesus holds nothing back from us — He shares everything with us that the Father has given to Him. It is now up to us to respond to this revelation. Fr. Steve
Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How diligent am I in seeking out the wisdom of Jesus for my life and particularly the issues I face in being His disciple?

Jesus, open to me the fullness of life that You offer to all who believe in You and follow Your Word. Let me never doubt that You will reveal to me all that I need to know to be Your disciple.

St. Hunna, pray for us.

Coincidence?

BO'sKFam REPORT

Coincidence?
May I give you some trivia.
Do you know the date of the SEC approval of our Tahanan orphanage?
July 11, 2007.
I find that eerie.
Just in case you don't know, that's my birthday.
But listen to this…
The orphanage started operating before this SEC approval.
The date Tahanan began accepting orphans? May 8, 2007.
Just to inform you, May 8 is my Mom's birthday.
All these were unplanned, believe me.
Here's one more crazy coincidence.
Grace To Be Bornis our ministry for pregnant women in crisis. (We've saved many babies already from abortion!)
We built the Grace To Be Born Center for 6 months.
When it was time to bless the center, the Board of Directors couldn't agree on a date. Everyone's schedule was very busy. But finally, there was one date left when everyone was free: May 8, 2009. So we grabbed it.
And then it hit me—"Hey, that's Mom's birthday!"
Too many coincidences!
I'm now convinced God has a sense of humor.
He likes having fun.
My fantasy?
God must be very pleased with our service for the poorest of the poor!

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez
