great lives

"By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit…" – John 15: 8

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The greatest and most effective testimony of our being Christians is when we live great lives.
Now we may fail and we may stumble and we may fall and we may have continuing problems.
I said great lives, not perfect lives… though God is working on that, too. We can talk and teach and preach and debate and argue and convince and even strangle each other in the name of faith and religion.
But unless people see the fruits in our lives, they won't know what kind of tree we're talking about.
And the fruits are in the work we do and the life we live.
Do we do our work honestly and well, no matter how big or small the task?
Do we live a faithful life by God's grace, becoming a more loving person every day?
When we do so, then people see God's glory in us.
Glory to God!Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
When people see our work and the lives we live, do they see how great God is?

Lord God, by Your grace, let Your goodness and greatness be seen in my life. Amen.

We seem to be never without disputes and differences of opinion. The question is, "How do we successfully deal with them so that they do not tear apart the Body of Christ?" Jesus gave us the authority of the Church as exercised through the Pope and Bishops. It is important to respect this authority when exercised as it will preserve us from error in our faith.

Acts 15:1-6
1 Some who had come down from Judea were instructing the brothers, "Unless you are circumcised according to the Mosaic practice, you cannot be saved." 2 Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and presbyters about this question. 3 They were sent on their journey by the
church, and passed through Phoenicia and Samaria telling of the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. 4 When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, as well as by the apostles and the presbyters, and they reported what God had done with them. 5 But some from the party of the Pharisees who had become believers stood up and said, "It is necessary to circumcise them and direct them to observe the Mosaic law." 6 The Apostles and
the presbyters met together to see about this matter.

P S A L M

Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4ab, 4cd-5
R: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
1 I rejoiced because they said to me, "We will go up to the house of the LORD." 2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. (R) 3 Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. (R) According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. (R)

G O S P E L

If you have ever watched the way a vinedresser cares for his vines in a vineyard, you may begin to understand why Jesus uses this image here to describe the way God the Father cares for us all. It takes a lot of care to get the best out of a grapevine and thus produce fine wine. God cares for us all this much. Let us be grateful for it anyway and give our all in serving Him in return.

John 15:1-8
1 Jesus said to his disciples: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. 2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. 3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. 4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a
branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be
done for you. 8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples."

my reflections
think: It is important to respect the authority of the Church as exercised through the Pope and Bishops as it will preserve us from error in our faith.

THAT HAND, THAT ABUNDANT FRUIT

Do you remember when Jesus approached a fig tree, searching for its fruits, but found none? Mark 11:12-14 tells us that, disappointed, Jesus cursed the tree and it withered.
In Luke 13:6-9, Jesus narrated the story of a landowner who, also in search for a fruit from one of his trees, found none. The landowner then ordered his servant to cut the tree. But the servant pleaded to give the tree one more year to bear fruit and if still it does not produce anything, then it may be cut off. Jesus expects His disciples to bear fruit — to be "mabunga" (fruitful), not "mabongga" (showy).
Jesus delights in a fruitful disciple. In today's Gospel, He says that we glorify the Father when we bear much fruit. He tells us that the Father prunes the branch that bears fruit so that it may become even more fruitful. The person who lives in Him and in whom He lives bears fruit abundantly.
To bear fruit abundantly means to produce good works for the kingdom of God. God is not contented with occasional good works. He expects us to always use our gifts to the fullest.
Relying on our own strength only, we are bound to fail. Thus, Jesus reminds us: "Remain in Me." Separated from Jesus, we can do nothing. Like the light bulb that will not light unless it is connected to a power source, we, too, cannot bear fruit on our own.
You and I also do get busted. We break down. As the Father prunes us in the hope that we may bear fruit abundantly, we hurt, falter, sulk and even get angry at God sometimes. God's ways can be painful, but they are always for our benefit. God's hands work two-way: gentle but also tough, like a calm breeze but also like a raging storm. Sometimes His hand caresses us but at times strikes us down. There is comfort but there is suffering. One cannot exist without the other. In all these opposite realities, however, the love of God persists.
Suffering has a beautiful message. If it is the way the hand of God moves, we should be grateful because it means that we are not far from God, for His
hand still reaches us. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
The hand of God is at times the hand of grace and at other times the hand of suffering, but it is always the hand of love.

Hand of God, be upon me. Hand of God, be my hand, too. Amen.

St. Brito, pray for us.

GOD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE

"If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it" – John 14:14

"So how did you manage to check in your overweight baggage?" asked the guard who was harassing me at the entrance of the Jackson's International Airport.
"There is nothing impossible with the Lord!" I replied. "What?" came the puzzled reply from the guard. "I said, 'there is nothing impossible with the Lord!'"
Earlier at the check-in counter of Air Nuigini, I was informed my baggage was overweight by 11 kilos. My head ran through the computations. I had to pay over P9,600 for a box of Ox & Palm corned beef. Way too much! But instead of giving up, I said a silent prayer, in the name of Jesus, to make it possible for me to check in my baggage without having to pay a single toea (Papuan equivalent of a cent).
After about 20 minutes, an assistant working at the check-in counter approached me. "Sir, my boss is asking you to come and check in your baggage." After a fewquestions, my baggage was accepted without me paying a single toea.
He is indeed the God of the impossible! Danny Tariman (danny@dtariman.com)

REFLECTION:
"All that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours." (Mark 11:24)

Paul includes Jesus' appearance to him at the end of the kerygma of the Gospel as he sees it. This tells us that Paul sees himself as one entrusted to bring the Gospel to the world. Paul's particular area of responsibility is the Gentile peoples. Faith somehow incorporates even the Gentiles into the Tradition of revelation that stretches back to Abraham and of which Jesus is the culmination and fulfillment.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8
1 I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. 2 Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; 4 that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; 5 that he appeared to Kephas, then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me.

P S A L M

Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5
R: Their message goes out through all the earth.
1 [2] The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 [3] Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. (R) 3 [4] Not a word nor a discourse whose voice is not heard; 4 [5] through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the
ends of the world, their message. (R)

G O S P E L

The promise that we will perform greater works than those of Jesus does seem a bit ridiculous at first. However, it becomes understandable when we realize that we cannot perform even lesser works without relying upon His grace. It is Jesus who really performs miracles in and through us — Him and the Holy Spirit. As vessels of His love to others, we become the instruments He uses to manifest His power and love to the world.

John 14:6-14
6 Jesus said to Thomas, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in my name, I
will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it."

my reflections
think: As vessels of God's love to others, we become the instruments He uses to manifest His power and love to the world.

THE APOSTOLIC FACTOR

We celebrate today the feast of the apostles, Philip and James.
Though with a Greek name, Philip, like Peter and Andrew, was from Bethsaida. This suggests that Philip must have been a fisherman, too. He preached the Gospel in Phrygia where he was also crucified at the Hierapolis.
James ("the Less" because he was younger than the other James) was a relative of Jesus, most probably a cousin. He became the first bishop of Jerusalem. He labored for a better relationship between Jewish Christians and Gentile converts. He also wrote the epistles we read in the New Testament. Like Philip, James died a martyr's death in the year 62 A.D. He was thrown down from the terrace of the Temple and stoned to death.
There are three important reasons why we should never forget the apostles. The apostles remind us that the events we celebrate in the liturgy are not mythological. They are our link to history. We come to believe in Jesus as the Christ through the testimony of the apostles. They handed down to us the Faith we now profess.
The apostles were also the very first to interpret the meaning of the events they link us to: the life, teachings and deeds of Jesus. The witness of the apostles remains until today as normative for all Christians. Fidelity to their teachings is fidelity to the Faith.
The apostles, more importantly, enabled us to experience the Risen Lord in Word and Sacrament as they were the first to celebrate the memory of Jesus. They created what we may call the "liturgical experience" of Christ. Celebrating the liturgy is always celebrating with the apostles. We owe the apostles more than a debt of gratitude. Human as they were, they were weak, blemished sinners. This serves as a comforting reminder to us that holiness is humanly possible, but of course with the mercy of God. He, indeed, does not call the qualified — He makes qualified those whom He
calls. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
The apostles link us to the past, interpret Jesus to us and give us a liturgical experience of Christ.

Thank You, Jesus, for choosing the apostles and empowering them to accomplish the mandate You have given them. May we always treasure them and remain faithful to their memory, their teaching and heritage. Amen.

St. Ansfrid, pray for us.

THE POWER OF ASKING

"And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son…" – John 14:13

One suppertime, my eldest son, Bene, asked, "After dinner, can I play on the computer?" My wife replied, "Son, read a book." My son's facial expression didn't change. With a big happy smile, he asked, "Mommy, after I read the book, can I play on the computer?" My wife answered, "Son, after you read the book, go straight to bed."
Still with a grin on his face, he asked, "Mommy, after reading the book, before I go to bed, can I play on the computer for 30 minutes?" "No, I want you to sleep right away."
"Mommy, how about if I play just for 15 minutes?" The negotiation continued until my wife conceded.
My son expected to get what he wanted. He used his smile, his puppy eyes and his cuteness. He used compromise. But the important thing was he got what he wanted.
As adults, we don't do that anymore. We go to God and say, "Lord, please give me…." And when we don't get it, we say, "OK, never mind." We quit. Easily. But the universe adjusts to your expectations. If you expect nothing, you get nothing.
Ask. Not for a bit. Not for a little. Ask for a double portion! Bo Sanchez(bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Is there something that I sincerely want to happen or have in my life? Do I persistently pray for it or do I easily give up?

Lord, grant me the grace to persevere in prayer, knowing that You are there, listening to me, and that You will grant what I ask for in a way that's best for me.

It is important that we remember the dignity that work gives the human person. By working we all share in the creative work of God, contributing something of our own genius and sweat to the heritage we bequeath to future generations. Let us pray for our government leaders that they take their responsibility seriously to provide work for all the citizens of the country. This is not an option for them; it is their duty.

Acts 13:44-52
44 On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. 46 Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the
Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.' " 48 The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, 49 and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region. 50 The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. 51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. 52 The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

P S A L M

Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4
R: All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R)

G O S P E L

As we celebrate the day for workers in the Catholic calendar, we remember all those who toil for unjust wages and are in dangerous or unacceptable working conditions. We pray that those who enforce or allow such injusticeswill be convicted of their mistakes and bring change to the working conditions of their employees. We also pray for the workers that they will put in a just day's work for their wages.

John 14:7-14 (or Matthew 13:54-58)
7 Jesus said to his disciples: "If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it."

my reflections
think: As we celebrate the day for workers in the Catholic calendar, we remember all those who toil for unjust wages and are in dangerous or unacceptable working conditions.

WORK ON A HOLIDAY

Today's memorial was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 not only to honor Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, but also to remind us that honest work can be a means to holiness. When we do our work honestly, we sanctify ourselves and others. By working honestly, we come to participate in God's continuing work of creation and Christ's redemptive work for humankind.
Thus, work is not a curse that befell upon the human race because of sin. Work is a blessing. Work is our dignity. Working honestly is a sublime expression of the image and likeness of God in us. It is also an integral part of our union with Christ.
Most people work but not all people work honestly. Most people work but not all people are happy with their work. And not all people work with the understanding that working honestly is their dignity as human beings.
While we thank God for our work today, let us ask from Him the grace that will always enable us to work honestly. While we thank God for workers, let us pray for those who refuse to work. While we thank God for the dignity of work, let us help others find the kind of work that befits a child of God and a disciple of Jesus.
It is quite ironic that while we celebrate work today, both in the Church and in civil society, there is no work today. It's a holiday. Let us make each day holy by our work. Work — and be holy! Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Am I happy with my work? Do I work honestly? How is my work an expression of the image and likeness of God in me? How is my work an integral part of my union with Christ? Does my work sanctify me and others?

Thank You, Lord, for the work I do. Guide me by the values of Your kingdom and help me by the power of Your hands as I work each day. I am Your child; may I give glory to Your name. I am a disciple of Jesus; may I become more and more like Him. Amen.

St. Marculf, pray for us.

VALENTINE SURPRISE

"In my Father's house there are many dwelling places… I am going to prepare a place for you." – John 14:2

When Tommy brought me home from our first Valentine's date, a wonderful surprise awaited me.
The first thing I noticed was the wonderful scent of flowers when I opened the door of my bedroom. One look at my bed explained why — it was covered with balloons and rose petals! A big bouquet lay in the middle alongside his Valentine's gift and a note.
My dad told me later that Tommy arrived at our house in the afternoon and asked permission to go to my room. He then proceeded to lovingly redecorate my bed before fetching me for our date. Is it any wonder that I married this guy?
If Tommy's love for me brought about such amazing results, imagine what awaits us when Jesus prepares a place for us in His Father's house.
We must remember not to get too attached with what we have in this earthly life. Living our lives faithfully for God and serving others will bring greater treasures. I'm sure that you'll be in for a marvelous surprise when you see Jesus' preparations made just for you. Cecilia Lim (cez_lim@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you ready for your date with Jesus?

1st READING

We are the begotten children of God through His Son, Jesus. It means that we cannot go over, under or around the person of Jesus, only through Him. The only way I know of going through something or someone involves getting to know that person or thing intimately. In this case, going through Jesus means that we need to have an intimate relationship with Him in order to become a child of God.

Acts 13:26-33
26 When Paul came to Antioch in Pisidia, he said in the synagogue: "My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent. 27 The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets that are read sabbath after sabbath. 28 For even though they found no
grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him put to death, 29 and when they had accomplished all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are now his witnesses before the people. 32 We ourselves
are proclaiming this good news to you that what God promised our ancestors 33 he has brought to fulfillment for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, 'You are my son; this day I have begotten you.'"

P S A L M

Psalm 2:6-7, 8-9, 10-11ab
R: You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.
6 "I myself have set up my king on Zion, my holy mountain." 7 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD. The LORD said to me, "You are my son; this day I have begotten you." (R) 8 "Ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession. 9 You shall rule them with an iron rod; you shall shatter them like an earthen dish." (R) 10 And now, O kings, give heed; take warning, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice before him; with trembling rejoice. (R)

G O S P E L
Jesus tells His disciples that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. What a wonderful sense of consolation these words bring to us as believers. All that remains is for us to take them to heart and live them to the full. Jesus is the Way in the midst of all the ways of the world; Jesus is the Truth amidst the lies of the modern materialistic world; and Jesus is the Life that goes on forever and does not come to an abrupt end when we die our mortal deaths.

John 14:1-6

1 Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. 2 In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. 4 Where I am going you know the way." 5 Thomas said to him, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

DO NOT LET YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED

We will experience many things in our lives that will unsettle us or at least have the potential to do so. Jesus reminds us today that this does not have to be the case. He tells us not to let our hearts be troubled, but to allow them to rest in the sure knowledge that He is with us no matter what is happening around us or to us, and that ought to be enough to allow us to trust that His grace will be sufficient to see us through anything.
Jesus Himself will experience the difficulty of entrusting all to God when He prays in the Garden of Gethsemane. Does He falter? No. He entrusts all into His Father's hands, and what does St. Paul tell us in the fifth chapter of his Letter to the Romans? Nothing other than that by the glory of the Father, Jesus was raised from the dead. The pattern of Jesus' life is the pattern of our own lives through the Sacrament of Baptism. We can therefore be sure that we will endure all things unto the gift of eternal life if we trust in God and do not allow the worries of the world to overcome us.
Yes, this is easier said than done, but no one ever said being a disciple of Jesus was going to be easy. What we have to do is learn how to trust God in all things. This will require being soaked in the truth and the Word of God. This requires that we regularly read the Word of God and submit our lives to the Holy Spirit. This means that we have to prioritize our spiritual lives over material ones. It is all about the choices we make. That is clearly within the purview of each of us — maybe not always easy, but certainly simply a matter of developing a healthy discipline of prioritizing our spiritual lives.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Perhaps the fundamental question we need to ask ourselves is, "How important to me is the gift of eternal life?" My answer to this question will set the tone for the rest of my life decisions.

Father in Heaven, do not allow me to be confused by the offers of the world. Help me to be able to see my choices clearly and thus discern well the decisions I will make.

St. Adjutor, pray for us.

THE REAL MIRACLE

"The works I do in my Father's name testify to me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep." – John 10:25-26

When I was a child, the magic of David Copperfield was all the rage. While my siblings and I marveled at the show, my older cousin would be busy making side comments on how the trick was probably being done.
It makes me think of the way the unbelievers must have explained away the miracles in Jesus' time. Even though no trickery was involved, they refused to trust their senses and even concocted a story about how the apostles must have stolen Jesus' body during the resurrection.
I guess that's why, with all the powers at His disposal, Jesus never used miracles as the focus of His ministry. He cured physical ailments but His aim was to heal diseased souls beset by sin.
Author Philip Yancey put it this way: "Jesus never met a disease he could not cure, a birth defect he could not reverse, a demon he could not exorcise. But he did meet sceptics he could not convince and sinners he could not convert."
The real miracle is God's forgiveness and our subsequent repentance and conversion. Are you letting Jesus work His miracle in you?Cecilia Lim (cez_lim@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:

Persecution has scattered the first Christians as they flee for their lives from those who would kill them. This forced missionary movement suddenly discovers that in the previous diaspora of the Jews there is a ready basis upon which to proclaim the Gospel in the towns and places where they now find themselves. God does indeed use suffering and even evil and turn it around for the good of the Gospel.

Acts 11:19-26
19 Those who had been scattered by the persecution that arose because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but Jews. 20 There were some Cypriots and Cyrenians among them, however, who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks as well, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. 21 The hand of the Lord was with them and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The news about
them reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart, 24 for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord. 25 Then he went to Tarsus to loo for Saul, 26 and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a
large number of people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.

P S A L M

Psalm 87:1b-3, 4-5, 6-7
R: All you nations, praise the Lord.
1 His foundation upon the holy mountains 2 the LORD loves: The gates of Zion, more than any dwelling of Jacob. 3 Glorious things are said of you, O city of God! (R) 4 I tell of Egypt and Babylon among those that know the LORD; Of Philistia, Tyre, Ethiopia "This man was born there." 5 And of Zion they shall say
"One and all were born in her; and he who has established her is the Most High LORD." (R) 6 They shall note, when the peoples are enrolled: "This man was born there." 7 And all shall sing, in their festive dance: "My home is within you." (R)

G O S P E L
It is partially true to say that a Good Shepherd is somewhat dependent upon faithful sheep who do indeed listen and respond to His voice. This is something to think about. How much priority do I give to listening to God's will in my life? God is always leading and guiding us. The most probable explanation to lack of guidance in our lives is lack of attentiveness on our part. Let us pray for the grace that we will never suffer from this problem.

John 10:22-30
22 The feast of the Dedication was then taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter. 23 And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly." 25 Jesus answered them, "I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name testify to
me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand. 30 The Father and I are one."

my reflections
t h i n k : How much priority do I give to listening to God's voice in my life?

LAYING A STRONG FOUNDATION

We live in a world where there is an "instant" version of almost anything: instant coffee, instant messaging, etc. In fact, we tend to think that something that cannot be delivered immediately is either not worth the effort or broken in one way or another. How wrong we are if we give in to this sort of thinking, particularly when it comes to relationships. Many youth of today have absorbed this mentality and apply it to their relationships. As Christians, we need to work against this mentality by laying strong and lasting foundations for our faith communities so that we can weather the storms and difficulties that may come our way.
Paul spent a year building the community of faith in Antioch and the same experience happened in many of the communities he founded. Today, there are too many supposedly Christian Churches sprouting up here and there with very little foundation to them other than the founder cannot seem to get along with one of the leaders in his previous Church. I find it very difficult to see how such a reality can be claimed to be a "work of the Holy Spirit" as the Spirit is a spirit of unity, not division. The greater challenge, and the one that will bear infinitely more fruit, is found in working through difficulties to build a stronger and more lasting
foundation to the original community. This is what the Catholic Church has done and she still endures 2,000 years later, as strong as ever.
The biggest problem with the proliferation of Christian Churches is the scandal of division that it witnesses to others. It also makes it much easier for the devil to overcome the work of these Churches as they are already divided. The only way for us to combat this problem is to work for the unity of all Christians such that we can all return to the one foundation — Christ and all that He wills for His Church. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How can I help in laying a stronger foundation for my faith community in the Church? How do we, as a community, offer service to the wider Catholic Church?

Jesus, You are the rock, the cornerstone upon which the Church is built. Help me to focus and build my life upon You and thus be a part of the Church You desire and started 2,000 years ago.

St. Zita, pray for us.

let god wipe away your tears

… God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. – Revelation 7: 17

A lot of things that happened to my life only made sense when I found God.
Before, they just seemed to be unexplainable, unwanted and undesirable events.
My parents separated when I was just a kid. I was sick of epilepsy when I was in high school. My father died when he and my mom were about to reconcile. And a host of painful, traumatic events happened one after the other. The heaviest was when I almost died of a possible incurable disease.
Yet, now I always proclaim, "I have a great life!"
I really do.
Because when I found God, my life changed — from seeing only the sad, ugly and painful things to noticing the happy, beautiful and victorious events that were also happening to me. I just didn't see it until God wiped away my tears.
With God in your life, the tears from your eyes will be tears of hope, peace and joy! Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you shedding tears of sorrow and pain, anger and bitterness? Let God wipe them away. Today.

Lord God, I offer to You my past. Let me live in the present in Your Presence! And let me be excited about the glorious future You have for me forever. Amen.

The Gospel is beginning to take root in the Gentile community as well as among the Jews. This will become a challenge for the Early Church as they try to discern how the Gospel is to be lived by those who have not come from a Jewish background. Although faith is the key, this understanding was still being developed — the Gospels were not yet written. Slowly the Traditions and Doctrine of the Christian Faith begin to develop and solidify in the community of the faithful.

Acts 13:14, 43-52
14 Paul and Barnabas continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia. On the sabbath they entered the synagogue and took their seats. 43 After the congregation had dispersed, many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God. 44 On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. 46 Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.' " 48 The Gentiles were delighted when they
heard this and
glorified the word of the Lord. 52 The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy
Spirit.

P S A L M

Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5
R: We are his people, the sheep of his flock.
1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; 2 serve the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful song. (R) 3 Know that the LORD is God; he made us, his we are; his people, the flock he tends. (R) 5 The LORD is good: his kindness endures forever, and his faithfulness, to all generations. (R)

2nd READING

In heaven there will be no more sorrow. We will all be happily praising God together. This is the life for which God has created us. Boring? Self-absorbed on the part of God? Not really. In praising God, the reason for our being, we will be brought to true fulfillment.

Revelation 7:9, 14b-17
9 I, John, had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 14 Then one of the elders said to me, "These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 "For this reason they stand before God's throne and worship him day
and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them. 17 For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

G O S P E L

Listening to the voice of the Good Shepherd is critical for a disciple. Only when we obey His Word and calling will we graze on green pastures and discover the fullest meaning of life. We may be able to get part of the way all on our own, but deep down inside something will always be missing when we are not living in obedience to God's Word.

John 10:27-30
27 Jesus said: "My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand. 30 The Father and I are one."

my reflections
t h i n k : Only when we obey His Word and calling will we graze on green pastures and discover the fullest meaning of life.

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY

The fourth Sunday of Easter is always Good Shepherd Sunday. We are invited to reflect upon the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and we as His sheep. This is a very important image from the point of view of God as the sheep are totally dependent upon the shepherd for their care. It is the shepherd who leads them to good pasture and to water, and protects them from wild animals and thieves. The same is true in our spiritual lives — we will never find true contentment and satisfaction apart from allowing Jesus to guide us into the arms of our loving Father in Heaven.
The opening line of the Gospel today captures a very important aspect of the shepherd-sheep relationship. It speaks of the sheep listening to the voice of their shepherd. In reality, the sheep are able to distinguish the voice of their shepherd from all the other foreign voices that may be giving instructions at any one time. It is that voice they follow; it is that voice that they trust.
We, too, must become adept at distinguishing between the voice of God and the many other voices in the world that could lead us astray. It takes time and effort on our part to learn to recognize the voice of God in the midst of the maelstrom of voices we encounter every day. It is a matter of life and death that we are able to do this or we will find ourselves developing a life plan that leads us away from eternal life rather than closer to it.
In his Letter to the Colossians, Paul warns them to avoid the empty philosophies of the world (Colossians 2:8-9) and thus place their lives under the grace of God and His wisdom — a wisdom and truth that lead to everlasting life. We have choices to make in our lives and surely they have consequences — and sometimes the consequences could lead to either eternal life or eternal death. Let us pray for the wisdom and grace to listen to the right voices and to be guided well in making our life choices.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Which are the voices I give authority to in my life? Are they voices that guide me along the path of eternal life or are they more concerned with matters of this world?

Jesus, help me to learn to recognize Your voice and that of the Father and the Holy Spirit so that I will be guided well in all my actions.

Blessed William Marsden, pray for us.
