Be True To Yourself

Be True To Yourself

Be true to how God made you.
Don’t try to be someone else.
Be the best that you can ever become.
Or else, Cherie Gil’s words will describe you (from an old Sharon
Cuneta movie): “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying-hard,
copy-cat.”
Friend, God created you with a special gift.  And only you can give
this gift to the world.  If you don’t become true to yourself, if you
don’t give this gift to the world, the world becomes a lesser place.
Love yourself.  Celebrate yourself.  Be yourself.
Be true to how God created you.
In other words, follow your heart.
Follow your path.
Follow your calling.
Follow your destiny.
Unfortunately, very few people encouraged us to do this.

“Why Don’t You Become Like Ate?”

       The opposite is true.
Some of us grew up being compared to others.
Some of us grew up hearing these words:

GROWING UP CATHOLIC

"We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." – Acts 19:2

Having grown up in a Catholic environment, I was familiar with almost all the traditions: Mass, confession, confirmation, feasts, etc. I knew I had to hear Mass on holy days of obligation, and I knew that confession is an important sacrament. When I joined a Catholic youth community, I started doing other things like serving in camps and singing in worship. And I thought that was that.
Although I believed in God, I didn't really let Him in my life. I was satisfied only to meet Him whenever I needed to. I prayed, yes, but I couldn't pray for myself because I felt like God was more concerned that I thought about the "bigger things," the ones that affected more people. I drew the line where my life ends and my faith starts; I thought it wasn't right to mix them. Having God involved in my personal life doesn't feel right — after all, why would He bother about someone as small and insignificant as me?
Boy, was I wrong! As I grew up, I learned that when you get to know God, He's not satisfied to be on the sidelines. He wants to be in your life. How silly of me to think that God doesn't care about the details of my life. Tina Matanguihan (tina.matanguihan@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Have you allowed God into your life today?

Lord, be in my life.

The ability to "speak in tongues" and to "prophesy" are two of the gifts of the Holy Spirit that are not that evident in the Church today. Perhaps it is because they tend to fall on the side of the mysterious rather than logical. I wonder what makes us scared of the possibility that God might speak through us (to prophesy) or that we might pray in a language that we do not understand (speaking in tongues)? It is a pity because I am sure these gifts are for our own good and not just God's entertainment!

Acts 19:1-8
1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior of the country and down to Ephesus where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They answered him, "We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3 He said, "How were you baptized?" They replied, "With the baptism of John." 4 Paul then said, "John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 Altogether there were about twelve men. 8 He entered the synagogue, and for three months debated boldly with persuasive arguments about the kingdom of God.

P S A L M

Psalm 68:2-3ab, 4-5acd, 6-7ab
R: Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.
1 [2] God arises; his enemies are scattered, and those who hate him flee before him. 2 [3] As smoke is driven away, so are they driven; as wax melts before the fire. (R) 3 [4] But the just rejoice and exult before God; they are glad and rejoice. 4 [5] Sing to God, chant praise to his
name, whose name is the LORD. (R) 5 [6] The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. 6 [7] God gives a home to the forsaken; he leads forth prisoners to prosperity. (R)

G O S P E L
Jesus tells us that the suffering we endure in this life is directed towards the new life we receive through faith that will surpass anything we could ever have here on earth. Do you believe this? I hope so, or else you will find it almost impossible to persevere through the struggles and difficulties of a life of discipleship.

John 16:29-33
29 The disciples said to Jesus, "Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. 30 Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God." 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now? 32 Behold, the hour
is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world."

BE BRAVE!

"Be brave!" These are the words of Jesus to His disciples today. He does not request them nor does He invite them to be brave. Jesus commands His disciples to be brave. But can bravery be commanded? Can we expect anyone to be brave simply because we order him or her to be brave?
Jesus can command His disciples to be brave because He gives them the example. The day following the supper where He ordered them to be brave, Jesus faces His passion and death with such remarkable serenity and audacity. He gives His disciples more than a command to follow; He gives them an example to follow, too. We cannot command anyone to be brave unless we are brave ourselves. We have no right to laugh at anyone's cowardice if we are cowards ourselves. We cannot order anyone to be anything without providing him or her an example – more than a command – to follow.
The same is true with Jesus' command that we love one another. Can love be commanded? In his first Encyclical Letter, Deus Caritas Est, Pope Benedict XVI, affirms that love can be commanded because it has been given first. Jesus can command us to love one another because He has first loved us. Love has been given; thus, love can be expected. Jesus was brave for us even unto death; let us be brave for Him in the midst of all the troubles in a world He has, in the first place, already conquered.
Love is like a well from which we may draw out the bravery we need. We develop courage when we experience that we are truly loved. Just as it is the unconditional and infinite love of Christ for us that should give us courage, so do we encourage others by our Christ-like love for them. One classic story of the late Jaime Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila, is about a boy who was unperturbedly playing while the airplane he was flying in experienced turbulent weather. When asked by an older passenger why he was not at all afraid that they might crash, the boy flashed a smile and said, "I know we won't crash because the pilot of this plane is
my dad. My dad won't let such a thing happen to us." Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Where does my courage to face the world each day come from?

You are my courage, O Lord, as I face the world each day. Let me not be brave because of will power but because of my faith in You, my Shepherd, besides whom I need no other. Amen.

St. Thethmar, pray for us.

self-righteous holiness

"As the Father loves, so I also love you. Remain in my love." – John 15:9

After doing some postgraduate studies in Europe, my eldest sister came home announcing that she was getting married to an Italian she met there. My sisters and I didn't accept the news too well because their relationship was not "discerned" and "prayed over" according to our community norms. When he came over to the Philippines to meet our family, my sisters and I had our self-righteous noses so high up in the air that you could actually have a clear view of our brains. A non-renewed Christian was going to contaminate our blood line! In an effort to be accepted, he even attended a Life in the Spirit Seminar during his short stay in Manila. But it
still wasn't enough to satisfy our standardof holiness.
Well, thank God he was more Christian than we were. Otherwise, my sister might have missed out on marrying such a fine Italian all because of her three bratty sisters who called themselves passionate Christians. After many, many years, we finally got it right — that being a Christian is all about loving like Jesus did and not about following or fitting into a set of norms. Praise God He did not discard us just because we didn't fit into His standard of holiness.Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com)

REFLECTION:
it is better to love than to be right.

Peter speaks and so goes the mind of the Church. We believe that when the Pope speaks ex cathedra (literally, from the chair) on issues of faith and morals, he speaks infallibly, that is, without error. He rarely uses such authority as it is not often necessary. Certain documents of the Councils of the Church also provide inerrant teaching. It is important for us to see how this authority is essential to maintaining the unity of the Church and also the purity of her doctrine.

Acts 15:7-21
7 After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to the Apostles and the presbyters, "My brothers, you are well aware that from early days God made his choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the Holy Spirit just as he did us. 9 He madeno distinction between us and them, for by faith he
purified their hearts. 10 Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? 11 On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they." 12 The whole assembly fell silent, and they listened while Paul and Barnabas described the signs and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles through them. 13 After they had fallen silent, James responded, "My brothers, listen to me. 14 Symeon has described how God first concerned himself with acquiring from among the Gentiles a people for his name. 15 The words of the prophets agree with this, as is written: 16 'After this I shall return and rebuild the fallen hut of David; from its ruins I shall rebuild it and raise it up again, 17 so that the rest of humanity may seek out the Lord, even all the Gentiles on whom my name is invoked. Thus says the Lord who
accomplishes these things, 18 known from of old.' 19 It is my judgment, therefore, that we ought to stop troubling the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but tell them by letter to avoid pollution from idols, unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood. 21 For Moses, for generations now, has had those who proclaim him in every town, as he has been read in the synagogues every sabbath."

P S A L M

Psalm 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 10
R: Proclaim God's marvelous deeds to all the nations.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. 2 Sing to the LORD; bless his name. (R) Announce his salvation, day after day. 3 Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. (R) 10 Say among the nations: The LORD is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. (R)

G O S P E L

Today's text reminds us to remain in the Father's love. If we look at the Greek word used here for "remain," namely menai, we will discover that the meaning is quite profound because it is really a call to "abide or live" in God. This indicates the depth of our dignity and identity as men and women created by God. We should never forget this lesson as we seek to live out our call as His disciples in today's world.

John 15:9-11
9 Jesus said to his disciples: "As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. 11 "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete."

my reflections
think: We should always remember our dignity and identity as men and women created by God when we seek to live out our call as His disciples.

SO DOES HE LOVE US

We do not usually wonder why Jesus loves us so much. Instead, we expect Jesus to love us more than we deserve. Likewise, we do not question how Jesus can love us immensely. We usually think that Jesus can love us that much because He is God. But today, let us pause for a while and, perhaps even just for now, ask: How can Jesus love us so much when we are not deserving of His Love?
Jesus Himself answers our question. "As the Father loves Me," He says, "so do I love you." Jesus loves us because the Father has loved Him first. Jesus can love us so much because the Father loves Him so much, too. Jesus loves us as His Father loves Him, and the measure of His love for us is the same measure of His Father's love for Him. His Father's love for Him is like an inexhaustible well from which Jesus draws out His love for us.
If someone approaches you and asks you why and how can Jesus loves us so much, read the Gospel
today to him.
This is also precisely why love can be commanded. Pope Benedict XVI said that love can be commanded because it has first been given. Jesus can command us to love one another because He has loved us first. Jesus loves us so that we may love others. Let us remain in this love.Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Jesus loves me so that I may love others, too. Love is not a mere invitation to me. Love is a command. The true measure of love is love without measure.

Thank You, Jesus, for loving me more than I deserve and more than I know. Help me to love others as much as You love me. Jesus, love others through me. Amen.

St. Benedicta, pray for us.

great lives

"By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit…" – John 15: 8

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The greatest and most effective testimony of our being Christians is when we live great lives.
Now we may fail and we may stumble and we may fall and we may have continuing problems.
I said great lives, not perfect lives… though God is working on that, too. We can talk and teach and preach and debate and argue and convince and even strangle each other in the name of faith and religion.
But unless people see the fruits in our lives, they won't know what kind of tree we're talking about.
And the fruits are in the work we do and the life we live.
Do we do our work honestly and well, no matter how big or small the task?
Do we live a faithful life by God's grace, becoming a more loving person every day?
When we do so, then people see God's glory in us.
Glory to God!Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
When people see our work and the lives we live, do they see how great God is?

Lord God, by Your grace, let Your goodness and greatness be seen in my life. Amen.

We seem to be never without disputes and differences of opinion. The question is, "How do we successfully deal with them so that they do not tear apart the Body of Christ?" Jesus gave us the authority of the Church as exercised through the Pope and Bishops. It is important to respect this authority when exercised as it will preserve us from error in our faith.

Acts 15:1-6
1 Some who had come down from Judea were instructing the brothers, "Unless you are circumcised according to the Mosaic practice, you cannot be saved." 2 Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and presbyters about this question. 3 They were sent on their journey by the
church, and passed through Phoenicia and Samaria telling of the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. 4 When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, as well as by the apostles and the presbyters, and they reported what God had done with them. 5 But some from the party of the Pharisees who had become believers stood up and said, "It is necessary to circumcise them and direct them to observe the Mosaic law." 6 The Apostles and
the presbyters met together to see about this matter.

R: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
1 I rejoiced because they said to me, "We will go up to the house of the LORD." 2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. (R) 3 Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. (R) According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. (R)

G O S P E L

If you have ever watched the way a vinedresser cares for his vines in a vineyard, you may begin to understand why Jesus uses this image here to describe the way God the Father cares for us all. It takes a lot of care to get the best out of a grapevine and thus produce fine wine. God cares for us all this much. Let us be grateful for it anyway and give our all in serving Him in return.

John 15:1-8
1 Jesus said to his disciples: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. 2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. 3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. 4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a
branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be
done for you. 8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples."

my reflections
think: It is important to respect the authority of the Church as exercised through the Pope and Bishops as it will preserve us from error in our faith.

THAT HAND, THAT ABUNDANT FRUIT

Do you remember when Jesus approached a fig tree, searching for its fruits, but found none? Mark 11:12-14 tells us that, disappointed, Jesus cursed the tree and it withered.
In Luke 13:6-9, Jesus narrated the story of a landowner who, also in search for a fruit from one of his trees, found none. The landowner then ordered his servant to cut the tree. But the servant pleaded to give the tree one more year to bear fruit and if still it does not produce anything, then it may be cut off. Jesus expects His disciples to bear fruit — to be "mabunga" (fruitful), not "mabongga" (showy).
Jesus delights in a fruitful disciple. In today's Gospel, He says that we glorify the Father when we bear much fruit. He tells us that the Father prunes the branch that bears fruit so that it may become even more fruitful. The person who lives in Him and in whom He lives bears fruit abundantly.
To bear fruit abundantly means to produce good works for the kingdom of God. God is not contented with occasional good works. He expects us to always use our gifts to the fullest.
Relying on our own strength only, we are bound to fail. Thus, Jesus reminds us: "Remain in Me." Separated from Jesus, we can do nothing. Like the light bulb that will not light unless it is connected to a power source, we, too, cannot bear fruit on our own.
You and I also do get busted. We break down. As the Father prunes us in the hope that we may bear fruit abundantly, we hurt, falter, sulk and even get angry at God sometimes. God's ways can be painful, but they are always for our benefit. God's hands work two-way: gentle but also tough, like a calm breeze but also like a raging storm. Sometimes His hand caresses us but at times strikes us down. There is comfort but there is suffering. One cannot exist without the other. In all these opposite realities, however, the love of God persists.
Suffering has a beautiful message. If it is the way the hand of God moves, we should be grateful because it means that we are not far from God, for His
hand still reaches us. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
The hand of God is at times the hand of grace and at other times the hand of suffering, but it is always the hand of love.

Hand of God, be upon me. Hand of God, be my hand, too. Amen.

St. Brito, pray for us.

GOD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE

"If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it" – John 14:14

"So how did you manage to check in your overweight baggage?" asked the guard who was harassing me at the entrance of the Jackson's International Airport.
"There is nothing impossible with the Lord!" I replied. "What?" came the puzzled reply from the guard. "I said, 'there is nothing impossible with the Lord!'"
Earlier at the check-in counter of Air Nuigini, I was informed my baggage was overweight by 11 kilos. My head ran through the computations. I had to pay over P9,600 for a box of Ox & Palm corned beef. Way too much! But instead of giving up, I said a silent prayer, in the name of Jesus, to make it possible for me to check in my baggage without having to pay a single toea (Papuan equivalent of a cent).
After about 20 minutes, an assistant working at the check-in counter approached me. "Sir, my boss is asking you to come and check in your baggage." After a fewquestions, my baggage was accepted without me paying a single toea.
He is indeed the God of the impossible! Danny Tariman (danny@dtariman.com)

REFLECTION:

Paul includes Jesus' appearance to him at the end of the kerygma of the Gospel as he sees it. This tells us that Paul sees himself as one entrusted to bring the Gospel to the world. Paul's particular area of responsibility is the Gentile peoples. Faith somehow incorporates even the Gentiles into the Tradition of revelation that stretches back to Abraham and of which Jesus is the culmination and fulfillment.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8
1 I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. 2 Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; 4 that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; 5 that he appeared to Kephas, then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me.

P S A L M

Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5
R: Their message goes out through all the earth.
1 [2] The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 [3] Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. (R) 3 [4] Not a word nor a discourse whose voice is not heard; 4 [5] through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the
ends of the world, their message. (R)

G O S P E L

The promise that we will perform greater works than those of Jesus does seem a bit ridiculous at first. However, it becomes understandable when we realize that we cannot perform even lesser works without relying upon His grace. It is Jesus who really performs miracles in and through us — Him and the Holy Spirit. As vessels of His love to others, we become the instruments He uses to manifest His power and love to the world.

John 14:6-14
6 Jesus said to Thomas, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in my name, I
will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it."

THE APOSTOLIC FACTOR

We celebrate today the feast of the apostles, Philip and James.
Though with a Greek name, Philip, like Peter and Andrew, was from Bethsaida. This suggests that Philip must have been a fisherman, too. He preached the Gospel in Phrygia where he was also crucified at the Hierapolis.
James ("the Less" because he was younger than the other James) was a relative of Jesus, most probably a cousin. He became the first bishop of Jerusalem. He labored for a better relationship between Jewish Christians and Gentile converts. He also wrote the epistles we read in the New Testament. Like Philip, James died a martyr's death in the year 62 A.D. He was thrown down from the terrace of the Temple and stoned to death.
There are three important reasons why we should never forget the apostles. The apostles remind us that the events we celebrate in the liturgy are not mythological. They are our link to history. We come to believe in Jesus as the Christ through the testimony of the apostles. They handed down to us the Faith we now profess.
The apostles were also the very first to interpret the meaning of the events they link us to: the life, teachings and deeds of Jesus. The witness of the apostles remains until today as normative for all Christians. Fidelity to their teachings is fidelity to the Faith.
The apostles, more importantly, enabled us to experience the Risen Lord in Word and Sacrament as they were the first to celebrate the memory of Jesus. They created what we may call the "liturgical experience" of Christ. Celebrating the liturgy is always celebrating with the apostles. We owe the apostles more than a debt of gratitude. Human as they were, they were weak, blemished sinners. This serves as a comforting reminder to us that holiness is humanly possible, but of course with the mercy of God. He, indeed, does not call the qualified — He makes qualified those whom He
calls. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
The apostles link us to the past, interpret Jesus to us and give us a liturgical experience of Christ.

Thank You, Jesus, for choosing the apostles and empowering them to accomplish the mandate You have given them. May we always treasure them and remain faithful to their memory, their teaching and heritage. Amen.

St. Ansfrid, pray for us.

THE POWER OF ASKING

"And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son…" – John 14:13

One suppertime, my eldest son, Bene, asked, "After dinner, can I play on the computer?" My wife replied, "Son, read a book." My son's facial expression didn't change. With a big happy smile, he asked, "Mommy, after I read the book, can I play on the computer?" My wife answered, "Son, after you read the book, go straight to bed."
Still with a grin on his face, he asked, "Mommy, after reading the book, before I go to bed, can I play on the computer for 30 minutes?" "No, I want you to sleep right away."
"Mommy, how about if I play just for 15 minutes?" The negotiation continued until my wife conceded.
My son expected to get what he wanted. He used his smile, his puppy eyes and his cuteness. He used compromise. But the important thing was he got what he wanted.
As adults, we don't do that anymore. We go to God and say, "Lord, please give me…." And when we don't get it, we say, "OK, never mind." We quit. Easily. But the universe adjusts to your expectations. If you expect nothing, you get nothing.
Ask. Not for a bit. Not for a little. Ask for a double portion! Bo Sanchez(bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Is there something that I sincerely want to happen or have in my life? Do I persistently pray for it or do I easily give up?

Lord, grant me the grace to persevere in prayer, knowing that You are there, listening to me, and that You will grant what I ask for in a way that's best for me.

It is important that we remember the dignity that work gives the human person. By working we all share in the creative work of God, contributing something of our own genius and sweat to the heritage we bequeath to future generations. Let us pray for our government leaders that they take their responsibility seriously to provide work for all the citizens of the country. This is not an option for them; it is their duty.

Acts 13:44-52
44 On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. 46 Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the
Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.' " 48 The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, 49 and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region. 50 The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. 51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. 52 The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

P S A L M

Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4
R: All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R)

As we celebrate the day for workers in the Catholic calendar, we remember all those who toil for unjust wages and are in dangerous or unacceptable working conditions. We pray that those who enforce or allow such injusticeswill be convicted of their mistakes and bring change to the working conditions of their employees. We also pray for the workers that they will put in a just day's work for their wages.

John 14:7-14 (or Matthew 13:54-58)
7 Jesus said to his disciples: "If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it."

WORK ON A HOLIDAY

Today's memorial was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 not only to honor Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, but also to remind us that honest work can be a means to holiness. When we do our work honestly, we sanctify ourselves and others. By working honestly, we come to participate in God's continuing work of creation and Christ's redemptive work for humankind.
Thus, work is not a curse that befell upon the human race because of sin. Work is a blessing. Work is our dignity. Working honestly is a sublime expression of the image and likeness of God in us. It is also an integral part of our union with Christ.
Most people work but not all people work honestly. Most people work but not all people are happy with their work. And not all people work with the understanding that working honestly is their dignity as human beings.
While we thank God for our work today, let us ask from Him the grace that will always enable us to work honestly. While we thank God for workers, let us pray for those who refuse to work. While we thank God for the dignity of work, let us help others find the kind of work that befits a child of God and a disciple of Jesus.
It is quite ironic that while we celebrate work today, both in the Church and in civil society, there is no work today. It's a holiday. Let us make each day holy by our work. Work — and be holy! Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Am I happy with my work? Do I work honestly? How is my work an expression of the image and likeness of God in me? How is my work an integral part of my union with Christ? Does my work sanctify me and others?

Thank You, Lord, for the work I do. Guide me by the values of Your kingdom and help me by the power of Your hands as I work each day. I am Your child; may I give glory to Your name. I am a disciple of Jesus; may I become more and more like Him. Amen.

St. Marculf, pray for us.
