TFC Wowowee contestant an internet hit

TFC Wowowee contestant an internet hit
By Henni Espinosa, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau

A touching story which unfolded on ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel
(TFC), “Wowowee”, is now an internet hit.

Barry Bogart, Jr. was a contestant for the talent portion of “Wowowee”
called Willie of Fortune last January. He ended up singing 2 songs for
the crowd and was an instant hit.

But behind the 28-year-old’s talent is a sad story. It has even
captured the attention of mainstream US media.

Bogart Jr. is an Amerasian. He said his father was an American
serviceman stationed in the former US base in Ologapo. Bogart, Jr. is
one of thousands of abandoned Amerasian children. He was hoping to
find his father in the US.

Bogart’s father left him and his mother before he was born. His mother
Herminigilda died from brain cancer when he was 5 years old. He ended
up living with other family and relatives.

Bogart’s story tugged at the heart of many Filipinos including Greg
Rosas, a Filipino restaurant owner from Seattle, Washington.

Rosas used his own money to process Bogart’s visa and buy him a plane
ticket to the US. Bogart did end up finding his father. He is now
staying with his newfound benefactor, Rosas, and plans to reunite with
his father in New Jersey in the future. Balitang America

Resignation Letter of Willie Revillame from ABS-CBN (Lumayas Ka Na WILLIE, wala kang kwenta!)

Willie: Please release me!
FUNFARE UPDATE By Ricardo F. Lo (The Philippine Star) Updated May 21,
2010 12:00 AM

Photo is loading...

Willie Revillame: Where to from here?

When Willie Revillame started hosting Wowowee in Feb. 2005, his heart
was light and easy, eager to please and entertain especially the
marginalized sector of Philippine society. It was a heart that truly
and sincerely cares for the masa with whom Willie can easily identify
because he, too, experienced how it was to miss meals and sleep on the
hard floor of a cramped rented room, with a dilapidated electric fan
that produced more creak than cool air.

Two weeks ago when he quit Wowowee in a huff and in protest against
Jobert Sucaldito whom he accused of hitting him “for almost one year
already” in Jobert’s program on dzMM (ABS-CBN’s sister company),
Willie was diagnosed to be suffering from ulcers, a bad throat (no
doubt from talking on the show almost non-stop for two hours and a
half Monday thru Saturday) and a clogged heart that continues to beat
for, should I say, the down-trodden, most of whom show up on Wowowee
in slippers (vendors, etc.) and in worn-out clothes (streetkids,
etc.), and go home not luhaan (no tears) because Willie sees to it
that they are cared for with a reassuring hug and, most important of
all, with financial help (even the contest losers get consolation
prizes).

Either you love Willie or you hate Willie. Most of those in the upper
class (A and B) — those who can afford to buy computers and maintain
Twitter and Facebook accounts — hate Willie with impunity; and those
in the lower class (B, C and D) — who can hardly afford to have three
meals a day and to buy branded clothes — love Willie with a passion.
There lies the secret of Wowowee’s success both here and abroad where
there are TFCs (The Filipino Channel).

Willie has remained “inaccessible” at the moment, he’s in “seclusion,”
refusing to answer or return calls (placed through third parties) or
text messages. He’s sorely missed by Wowowee followers and his
co-hosts (all of them, I hope!) and his staff who have only nice words
for Willie.

“He’s generous,” said one of the 98 staffers whom Willie treated to a
holiday in Hong Kong with $200 pocket money each. “He never forgets to
give us bonus or to help with hospital bills and other needs kapag
kulang ang budget namin,” adding with pained laughter, “parang nga
siya ATM namin, eh!”

Does this piece sound like, sigh, a “tribute” to Willie who has been
temporarily replaced (for two weeks) by Robin Padilla on Wowowee which
is, the network’s biggest money-maker? And the bigger question: Will
Willie ever go back to Wowowee?

Read between the lines of the following letter Willie has just sent to
the ABS-CBN bosses, a copy of which was furnished Funfare by my Bohol
Avenue VDPA (Very Deep Penetration Agent) who swore that she would
kill me if I revealed her identify (don’t worry, “auntie,” the secret
will remain a secret forever):

12 May 2010

MR. EUGENIO LOPEZ, III

Chairman of the Board

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.

Mo. Ignacia Ave., Quezon City

Through: Ms. Charo Santos-Concio

President

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.

Dear Sir Gabby and Ma’am Charo,

I have labored over the past week on what to do in the face of another
setback in my relations with the management of the network. ABS-CBN
has been my home for the last five years and five months and it has
given me the greatest gift – the opportunity to reach out to people
who have so little in life.

In the process, I have come to realize that my gratitude to the
network would be more meaningful if I considered the impact of my
recent actions which has placed the station in a bad light. This is
among the reasons, as I will explain in this letter, that I humbly
request the management, to release me as a talent of the network.
(Willie’s contract is good for one year and a half more. — RFL)

It is no secret that the program “Wowowee,” for almost five and a half
years, has been the core of my existence. The program gives me a sense
of purpose because I make people happy and I give them hope that,
despite their difficulties, they can make things happen for
themselves. Because of this, my world has revolved around the show.
The desire to make it the best noontime show, has consumed my waking
hours, as I conceptualize its format and contents from Monday to
Saturday. Apart from this, I want the show to give the network
excellent ratings to maintain its reputation as the leader in the
broadcasting industry.

My devotion to the show is unparalleled that I have even been besieged
by health problems due to the long hours I spend daily, thinking of
how to bring “Wowowee” closer to the public. In fact, I have developed
a heart blockage, which has already once posed a real threat to my
life. I have sacrificed so much. Now, I have to accept the reality
that I also have to take good care of my health.

Hence, it is very painful to hear every time my show is the target of
unwanted and unnecessary tirades. I do not think that these people
even have the slightest clue of what I go through to put together a
show like “Wowowee”’. The show is not for me, but for those people who
dream of a better life. Is it too much to ask that we be respected for
what we do? Is it too much to ask that we be defended from such
attacks?

My outburst last week during the live presentation of the show is
nothing more than a reflection of my frustration over these things,
and was not at all meant to disrespect the network and its management.
I implore you to understand that several incidents, which were beyond
my control which have marred the reputation of the show to some
extent, have already taken their toll on me.

There was the “Wilyonaryo” incident wherein we were accused of
deceiving contestants about their winnings; the Ultra stampede wherein
I was blamed and severely criticized; the misunderstanding about my
remarks when the coverage of the funeral of the late Pres. Corazon
Aquino was unexpectedly shown in the giling-giling portion of
“Wowowee”’s airing, for which I have apologized. In all these
incidents, I took responsibility even if I was not at fault.

I do not want to cause any further embarrassment to the network. I
know that all these have caused so much strain on our relations and I
would like to save the situation by asking that I be released as a
talent of the station. This way, I will have the much-needed space and
time to contemplate on my direction in life and, at the same time,
maintain the relationships I have built within the network, which are
all worth preserving.

Before I end this letter, I would like to express my sincerest
gratitude to all the important people I have had the good fortune to
work with during the years I have been with ABS-CBN.

There will never be enough words to express my gratitude to all of you…

Salamat at mabuhay po kayong lahat!

Respectfully yours,

— Willie B. Revillame

Mr. Johnny Manahan

Ms. Arlene De Castro

Ms. Linggit Tan

Mr. Jay Montelibano

Mr. Edgar Mortiz

There you are.

I agree with what Tempo’s Ronald Constantino wrote in his column
yesterday: Willie is Wowowee and Wowowee is Willie, as in worthless
one without the other? It’s like saying, Sharon is Megastar and
Megastar is Sharon...Maricel is Diamond Star and Diamond Star is
Maricel...Or, Vilma is Star For All Seasons and Star For All Seasons
is Vilma.

My prayer is that Willie and the ABS-CBN bosses will adjourn their
scheduled meeting (on Monday, May 24?) on a happy note. Let’s keep our
collective fingers crossed.

TO REPLACE CITOM: City plans new traffic agency

TO REPLACE CITOM: City plans new traffic agency
By Rene U. Borromeo (The Freeman) Updated May 21, 2010 12:00 AM

EBU, Philippines - There is a plan to abolish the City Traffic
Operations Management (CITOM) and to create a much bigger traffic
enforcement body to be called Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO).

The proposal of Councilors Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem, Raul Alcoseba and
Augustus Pe Jr. was presented in a public hearing before the start of
the city council’s regular session last Wedneday and nobody opposed
the plan.

Engr. Nigel Paul Villarete, head of the City Planning and Development
Office, spoke before the city legislators and supported the move to
create the CCTO saying “It’s the key to a better and orderly Cebu
City.”

Villarete explained that the Cebu City Transportation Office will act
as the local counterpart of the Department of Transportation and
Communication, the “mother agency” of the Land Transportation Office.

Jakosalem explained that the creation of the CCTO does not mean that
the CITOM Board, which is headed by the city mayor, will be also
abolished. The board will continue to oversee the functions and
performance of the new department.

According to Jakosalem the head of the CCTO will become member of the
CITOM Board, the body that will formulate policies, agenda and
direction and the CCTO will just implement these.

“If not there will be too much room of corruption,” said Jakosalem,
chairman of the city council’s committee on transportation.

Pe also explained that once the CCTO will be created, all functions of
CITOM will be absorbed by the new traffic body that will be headed by
a traffic expert.

The creation of CCTO is also to ensure that the huge amount of public
investment on traffic signal equipment and other facilities are
properly protected, maintained and operated.

There is a recommendation that deserving traffic personnel will be
granted security of tenure to ensure a continued leadership in traffic
management with core values such as discipline, integrity and service.

Jakosalem said the CCTO shall have four divisions — transportation
planning, transportation engineering, traffic enforcement and parking
operations division, and support services.

The transportation planning division shall have four sections —
planning, monitoring & evaluation, traffic education and the
management of information system.

It will conduct periodic review of the urban traffic system to
provide optimum coordination of the intersections.

Jakosalem said the traffic engineering division shall have three
sections — civil works and signage and pavement marking section,
traffic signal control, and traffic signal maintenance.

Meanwhile, the traffic enforcement and parking operations division
shall have six sections — traffic enforcement, mobile operation,
parking operations and pedestrian violations, special traffic action
section, communication, billing and collections.

The support services division shall be responsible in the performance
of administrative functions, including the logistics, legal and
investigation section.

At present, CITOM only has one lawyer that is why its legal section is
not capable of filing the traffic-related cases before the courts for
those erring drivers, who just ignore their violations.

Statistics show that CITOM enforcers apprehend about 800 erring
drivers everyday, but many of those who are apprehended just ignore
the citation tickets issued to them because their driver’s licenses
were not confiscated.

Jakosalem had moved that CITOM enforcers should be empowered to
confiscate the licenses of erring drivers, but his proposed ordinance
is still pending for deliberation at the City Council.

A driver’s license can be confiscated only if the apprehending officer
will issue Temporary Operators Permit (TOP) to the erring driver, but
most of the traffic enforcers are armed only with traffic citation
tickets. — /NLQ (FREEMAN NEWS)

“Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my cause in
Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.” – Acts 23:11

“If there is a God, why would He let so many horrible things happen? I
wonder why when a child is saved from a burning building or gets a
miracle cure for cancer, people praise God. But when a 9/11 happens,
He does not get the condemnation. If I can get around these questions,
I will have a better chance of restoring a faith long since lost.”
This e-mail came from my Irish colleague Derek based in Singapore, who
was still grieving the death of his toddler son.
Can I lead him back? We had animated debates at work but managed to
talk about life whenever he was in town. In between, I would forward
inspirational text messages. He would be amazed how each message came
as a timely answer to a dilemma.
Before he left the company, he wrote, “In many ways, Marie, I have a
very deep respect for people like you who have been through personal
challenges and have come out the other side with the help of your
faith.”
I did not preach. But if in the process of walking my faith his would
be restored, what a blessing! Marie Franco (rfranco@its.jnj.com)

REFLECTION:
Did God allow me to cross paths with a non-believer to bear witness?

Use me, O Lord.

Paul is no fool and he is not beyond turning his enemies on to each
other if it might be to his benefit and, more importantly, to the
benefit of the Gospel. Even in captivity he is still able to proclaim
the Good News to his captors and to meet with those who come to see
him for advice. Paul does not think of his own welfare first but of
that of the Church. What an inspiration!

Acts 22:30; 23:6-11
30 Wishing to determine the truth about why Paul was being accused by
the Jews, the commander freed him and ordered the chief priests and
the whole Sanhedrin to convene. Then he brought Paul down and made him
stand before them. 23: 6 Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and
some Pharisees, so he called out before the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I
am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees; I am on trial for hope in the
resurrection of the dead.” 7 When he said this, a dispute broke out
between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the group became divided. 8
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection or angels or
spirits, while the Pharisees acknowledge all three. 9 A great uproar
occurred, and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party stood up
and sharply argued, “We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a
spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” 10 The dispute was so serious
that the commander, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them,
ordered his troops to go down and rescue him from their midst and take
him into the compound. 11 The following night the Lord stood by him
and said, “Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my
cause in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.”

Psalm 16:1-2a, 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11
R: Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.
1 Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; 2 I say to the LORD,
“My Lord are you.” 5 O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is
who hold fast my lot. (R) 7 I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in
the night my heart exhorts me. 8 I set the LORD ever before me; with
him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. (R) 9 Therefore my
heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in
confidence. 10 Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether
world, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.
(R) 11 You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your
presence, the delights at your right hand forever. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus tells His disciples that work of the Gospel will extend beyond
them to others. The Gospel has been entrusted to us and thus we need
to do what we can to pass on the Good News of our salvation to as many
people as we can. Jesus has a place in His plan of salvation for us
all; let us seek it out and live it as faithfully as we can.

John 17:20-26
20 Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: “I pray not
only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their
word, 21 so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I
in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that
you sent me. 22 And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that
they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they
may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you
sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, they
are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me,
that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me
before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, the world
also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent
me. 26 I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that
the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”
1 Samuel 13-16
my reflections

what we can to pass on the Good News to as many people as we can.

SABBATH

ONE BUT NOT THE SAME

Jesus’ “high priestly prayer” ends today. Today’s Gospel is exactly
what rhetoricians of old would call “peroration.” Peroration is that
part of a speech that, among other things, restates the speaker’s main
theme with an added emotional emphasis.
With all the four chapters of His prayer (14-17) in John, one theme
stands: Jesus is leaving His disciples, but will return. “I will not
leave you orphans,” He says. He will be gone from their sight but, in
a mysterious yet real way, remain with His disciples if they are
faithful to His teaching. Just before He gives an “amen” to His long
after-dinner speech or prayer, Jesus repeats this theme, but with a
new twist. Jesus seems concerned only not with the apostles who were
physically gathered around Him that evening; He widens the scope of
His solicitude by embracing all “those who will believe” in Him
through the words of His apostles. He promises that the future
generations of His disciples will also continually enjoy His presence.
All Christians from the time of the apostles up until ours are
included in the prayer that Jesus offered to the Father as a “grace
after meals” of the Last Supper.
“Father, may they be one, just as You and I are one,” Jesus prayed.
But, sadly, we remain disunited. Out of the total population of
Christians, only 60 to 63 percent are in union with the Pope, the
appointed vicar of Christ on earth. Serious conflicts among different
Christian churches gave birth, first to the orthodox churches of the
East, next to the Protestant churches of the West. The Protestant
break-off eventually led to further fragmentation, so that today we
are witnesses to the reality that the protesting churches are divided
and subdivided into sects. More than allegations of sexual misbehavior
and more than even the inquisition of medieval times, disunity is
Christianity’s greatest scandal.
If we do dare pray with Jesus His “high priestly prayer,” is the
“amen” that we give His peroration? If not, then, in our small and big
ways, let us sow seeds of unity with all Christians and create more
avenues for true collaborative mission in the world. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Disunity is Christianity’s greatest scandal.

May we be united, Jesus, as You and the Father are united. Heal every
wound of division among those who bear the name “Christian.” Amen.

St. Aquila, pray for us.
