Don’t Deteriorate; You Can Keep Growing!

        My mother is 84 years old and she hasn’t stopped learning.
       On her desk is a huge pile of books.
       She still loves to read.
Obviously, she’ll tell you that all other books pale in comparison to
the books I write. (Hehe.) She is, after all, the Founder, Chairman,
and President of Bo’s Fans Club International.
But she doesn’t just read.
Last week, she was watching TV and asked me, “Bo, come, listen to this.”
I sat beside her and we watched EWTN together.
EWTN is a Catholic channel from the US and she loves listening to
profound lectures there. Fantastic.
I’m amazed that at 84, she hasn’t stopped learning.
I hope that when I reach her age, I’ll be like her too.

Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done? says
the Lord. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in
my hand, house of Israel. – Jeremiah 18:6

“Lord, I am unworthy of Your love! I am a sinful person!” A newly
baptized sister in our community cried profusely as we prayed for her.
We whispered in her ears that our God is a merciful God. He knows all
our faults and weaknesses and forgives us when we repent. He gives us
the grace to stay away from sin if we ask for it.
I have encountered people who feel unworthy of joining renewal
communities because they think they have committed the worst sins in
their lives. But we are all unworthy; it is God who, in His infinite
kindness and love, makes us worthy to receive His gifts. What is
needed is for us to repent of all our sins.
We are all “works in progress” in God’s hands. Just like the clay in
the potter’s hands, whenever we do not turn out to be what He wants us
to be, He continues working on us and molding us. What is needed is
for us to yield to God’s leading and to pray for delivery from the

1st READING

The epistle of love, as it is sometimes called, exhorts us to love as
Christ has first loved us. Jesus did not wait for us to become good
before He loved us, nor did He wait until we sinned no more. He died
while we were sinners to prove that His love for us was of the highest
kind possible — unconditional. Let us pray for the grace to love one
another in the same way.

1 John 4:7-16 (or Jeremiah 18:1-6)
7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone
who loves is begotten by God and knows God. 8 Whoever is without love
does not know God, for God is love. 9 In this way the love of God was
revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might

but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. 11

G O S P E L

Martha has great faith. How does yours compare with hers? So often our
faith is lacking. This should not lead us to despair, as that is a
sin. Rather it should inspire us to pray for a deeper and stronger
faith. Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit that we need to earnestly
desire and seek. If we do not ask for it, we probably won’t get it.

John 11:19-27 (or Matthew 13:47-53 or Luke 10:38-42)
19 And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them
about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she
went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus,
“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 [But]
even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” 23
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” 24 Martha said to him, “I
know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus told
her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even
if he dies, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me
will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord.
I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the
one who is coming into the world.”

I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE

Jesus arrives only to find that Lazarus has already died. Martha then
makes an interesting comment when she speaks to Jesus saying that she
does not believe he would have died if Jesus had come earlier. She
does not seem to be accusing Jesus of anything, just recognizing that
His presence would have made a difference for Lazarus. We see a latent
faith in the resurrection that Jesus draws out and makes explicit. He
then calls out to Lazarus and raises him from the dead!
Jesus is not just all about words and pious platitudes — He has the
power to transform a situation in ways that no man before Him has ever
demonstrated. It is a miracle such as this one that gives credence to
the claim that Jesus was raised from the dead by the Father. If Jesus
can raise Lazarus from the dead, then it takes only a simple step to
believe that God the Father has the power to do the same for His Son,
Jesus.
It is important that we reflect upon the hope of the resurrection as
it is this belief that sets Christianity apart from other religions.
It is an extraordinary belief to put one’s life under its promise. Yet
this is what our faith demands of us: belief in the impossible and
trust in that which seems highly improbable. Perhaps it is not such a
strange thing to demand when we consider that 99 percent of those who
use computers would find it impossible to explain how it works. Yet we
are quite willing to entrust our lives to computers in many different
ways. With God, at least it is possible to have a relationship; with
the computer, this is definitely not the case.
Martha expresses her belief in the resurrection and Jesus tells her
that it is through Him, Who is the resurrection and the life, that she
will experience the resurrection. This is both now, in the life of
Lazarus, and later when she passes from this life. Fr. Steve Tynan,

Reflection Question:
How does my belief in the resurrection from the dead govern the way I
make choices and live my life?

Father, thank You for the promise of the resurrection. Help me to be
so inspired by this promise that I will never hesitate to be obedient
to all You ask of me.

MY B.A.G. OF MIRACLES

“As in the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us
wonderful signs.” – Micah 7:15

Years ago, I started a journal called My B.A.G. of Miracles.
Originally, these were scribbles in my planner. In 2008, I created my
blog using this theme. Here’s my welcome message:
Miracles are signs of God’s love for us. We are showered with them
every day. Most go unnoticed because we don’t have an attitude of
gratitude. My B.A.G. of Miracles is a journal of the miracles in my
life. B is for Blessings — graces I received, answered prayers,
provisions for my needs and good things people did for me. They are
the miracles God blesses me with, directly or through others. A is for
Accomplishments — my achievements, trials I overcame and work I
completed. These are the miracles God works within me, instances that
show I was empowered by the Almighty. G is for the Good I did for
others — times when I was used as a channel for God’s Word or as His
instrument. They are the miracles God blesses the people around me
with when I allow Him to use me as a conduit.
I write these down that I may remember the wonders of God’s amazing

Forget not the many favors of the Lord upon your life .

1st READING

God calls all shepherds to care for the flock they have been given —
the staff being a sign of their authority and leadership. The role of
the Bishops is to care for the People of God. They need to make sure
that they do not allow other concerns to distract them from this task.
It is their duty to always stand in solidarity with the poor and to
speak for them.

Micah 7:14-15, 18-20
14 Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your
inheritance, that dwells apart in a woodland, in the midst of Carmel.
Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old; 15 as in
the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful
signs. 18 Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and pardons
sin for the remnant of his inheritance; who does not persist in anger
forever, but delights rather in clemency, 19 and will again have
compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt? You will cast into the
depths of the sea all our sins; 20 you will show faithfulness to
Jacob, and grace to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from
days of old.

G O S P E L

Jesus reminds us that it is our choices that are going to contribute
to the state of our salvation or lack thereof, not our bloodlines. We
need to realize that discipleship is all about choices — choosing God
over the world; good over wrong; holiness over banality and so on. Are
we willing to make these choices? It is good to ponder at length the
choices we made yesterday and will make today and tomorrow.

Matthew 12:46-50
46 While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers
appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. 47 Someone told him,
“Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak
with you.” 48 But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my
mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward
his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For
whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister,
and mother.”

WHAT IS THE NATURE OF DISCIPLESHIP?

The above question is one of the critical questions for the Church to
answer today. What exactly do we mean by “discipleship” in the 21st
century? In many ways the answer is exactly the same as last century
and the century before that. However, perhaps I have asked the wrong
question: how do we live discipleship in the 21st century? But the
answer is still the same, I hear you reply. This is true because the
heart of both the nature and the expression of discipleship, no matter
how you want to examine it, is obedience to God’s will!
If obedience to God’s will is lacking in a person’s life, they cannot
be called disciples of Jesus. Obedience to God’s will is the litmus
test of discipleship. Yet, I find it truly amazing that many people
today very conveniently forget about the virtue of obedience when they
speak of discipleship. Many religious men and women are no longer
interested in their vow of obedience to their superior; many priests
treat their promise of obedience to their bishop and his successors
with scant respect. Why is there such a struggle with obedience?
I think the answer rests in the growing level of individualism in our
society. Children grow up in a society that highly values freedom of
thought and expression. This is a good thing but freedom has to be
understood within the context of the truths that govern them. True
freedom is not absolute — it is always in submission to the truth. It
is this aspect of freedom that is poorly understood today.
Jesus tells us that it is the truth that sets us free (John 8:32).
This means that freedom is subservient to the truth; it must always be
guided by the truth of our humanity — who we are as beings created in
the image and likeness of God. Freedom is not being free to do
whatever one feels like doing, but freedom to follow the truth that
God puts before us as essential to our human nature. Fr. Steve Tynan,

Reflection Question:
What do I understand by freedom when I speak of it in terms of the
freedom to choose what I will do in a particular situation?

Jesus, You have freed us from the powers of sin and death and opened
for us the way to true human fulfillment. Help us to understand the
demands of truth as we exercise freedom in our lives.

God's Message For You Today, June 26, 2010

THE SECRET
 
"... only say the word and my servant will be healed." – Matthew 8:8

Simply faith (not simple faith). That's all this gentile Roman official had. Being an officer, he knew what authority was all about. And he knew the kind of authority that Jesus had. He didn't demand any signs from heaven like the Pharisees did. Jesus knew who He was and this Roman official knew that.
This reminds me of a popular healing priest, Fr. Suarez. He heals so quietly without much fanfare just by touching and conversing casually at times with the people asking for healing. None of that demon whipping, casting out screams and mantras as if the demons inside the sick person were deaf. If that's the kind of healing session you're used to, you are in for a surprise when you watch Fr. Suarez at work. It's seemingly effortless but the number of healings speaks for the power at work.
When you know who you are and whose you are, life will suddenly cease to be complicated. Life only becomes hard when you are trying to live it out on your own. When you recognize the true source of life and power, everything becomes real simple. Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com)

The People of God lament the destruction of the Temple and of their nation. Yet they only have themselves to blame. Does this story sound familiar? Well, it reminded me of my own life up until the time I decided enough was enough — the day I decided to be a disciple. Since that day things have been very different, not yet perfect, but definitely moving in the right direction.

Lamentation 2:2, 10-14, 18-19
2 The Lord has consumed without pity all the dwellings of Jacob; he has torn down in his anger the fortresses of daughter Judah; he has brought to the ground in dishonor her king and her princes. 10 On the ground in silence sit the old men of daughter Zion; they strew dust on their heads and gird themselves with sackcloth; the maidens of Jerusalem bow their heads to the ground. 11 Worn out from weeping are my eyes, within me all is in ferment; my gall is poured out on the ground because of the downfall of the daughter of my people, as child and infant faint away in the open spaces of the town. 12 They ask their mothers, "Where is the cereal?" — in vain, as they faint away like the wounded in the streets of the city, and breathe their last in their mothers' arms. 13 To what can I liken or compare you, O daughter Jerusalem? Jesus heals many who are sick. What about the sick who are not healed when we pray for them? Perhaps God has some other plan for them? I do not know. We all have to die of something, so why not sickness? It is not as though some people never experience mortal death. The will of God will always retain a certain mysterious element beyond our understanding.

Matthew 8:5-17
5 When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, 6 saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully." 7 He said to him, "I will come and cure him." 8 The centurion said in reply, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come here,' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, "Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the kingdom of heaven, 12 but the children of the kingdom will be driven out into the outer darkness, where there will be wailing and
grinding of teeth." 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, "You may go; as you have believed, let it be done for you." And at that very hour his servant was healed. 14 Jesus entered the house of Peter, and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, the fever left her, and she rose and waited on him. 16 When it was evening, they brought him many who were possessed by demons, and he drove out the spirits by a word and cured all the sick, 17 to fulfill what had been said by Isaiah the prophet: "He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases."

All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for
refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness. – 2
Timothy 3:16

You’ve seen them on TV.
Each one professes to be right. Both quote the Bible expertly, using
God’s Word for defense and offense.
Yet, what they seem to achieve is more divisiveness. Insults and
provocations are their primary weapons as they tear down each other on
different channels. It’s saddening to note that the Good News is used
for destructive debates and un-Christian misinformation. They seem to
just one-up each other.
Overuse, misuse and abuse of Scriptures will never lead to God.
My friend Rene sends me text messages that contain God’s Word of hope
regularly. Often, they will strike me at the heart. They are just the
right words at the right time. That’s what Scriptures should do:
become a source of inspiration and personal words of God to you. Jun

1st READING

Paul tells us that “all Scripture is useful for teaching, reproof,
correction and training in righteousness.” Scripture is the basic
manual of Christian survival and we are mad if we do not use it
accordingly. There is nothing magical about reading and understanding
the Scriptures; there is a multitude of books to help the beginner and
the expert. We have no excuse. Reading Scripture has to be the bedrock
of our life of faith.

2 Timothy 3:10-17
10 You have followed my teaching, way of life, purpose, faith,
patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, and sufferings, such as
happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, persecutions that I
endured. Yet from all these things the Lord delivered me. 12 In fact,
all who want to live religiously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
13 But wicked people and charlatans will go from bad to worse,
deceivers and deceived. 14 But you, remain faithful to what you have
learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, 15
and that from infancy you have known the sacred scriptures, which are
capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ
Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching,
for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17
so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every
good work.

G O S P E L

This rhetorical question, I believe, reinforces the notion that the
Messiah is a descendant of David. The crowd is pleased with Jesus’
argument as they seem to slowly accept Him as the Messiah. If that is
the case, they would definitely be happy as they have been longing for
a Messiah for centuries now.

Mark 12:35-37
35 As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said, “How do the
scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, said: “The Lord said to my lord, ‘Sit at
my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet.’ ” 37 David
himself calls him ‘lord’; so how is he his son?” The great crowd heard
this with delight.

INSPIRED OF GOD

I love poetry. I love songs, including pop, most especially if they
are poetic. I enjoy even the religious poems of Rumi, the classical
Muslim man of letters and mysticism. I love them, for they inspire me.
Oftentimes, they lift my sagging spirits. When I feel down, all I need
to do, besides prayer and even during prayer, is reach out for my
favourite lines from a favorite chanteur or chanteuse, poet or writer.
They inspire me, no doubt. But that is not to say that they are
inspired themselves. They console me alright, but in the same vein,
that does not mean that they lead me without fail to the God of
consolation, no matter if what they afford me appear to be divine and
heavenly consolations. The story of Paul, too, has always moved me in
many ways. Today’s first reading is one of those high points in Paul’s
life that do not fail to tug at my rather sensitive heart. Paul is
saying goodbye. He knew he is to die soon as he writes to his beloved
disciple, Timothy. His story of fidelity and love for the Lord is an
account that people could not easily gloss over. His story moves us,
inspires us and catapults us to higher levels of resolve and
resignation to the Divine Will.
But there is more to life than merely being lifted up emotionally. We
need more than just ephemeral emotional “highs” that come and go.
Today, Paul refers precisely to this God-given resource that serves
not merely as inspiration, but as solid basis for a life lived as God
would have us do. “All Scripture is inspired of God,” Paul avers, “and
is useful for teaching — for reproof, correction and training in
holiness so that the man of God may be fully competent and equipped
for every good work.”
It is definitely good to seek for inspiration from anywhere one can
get it. But it is best to seek for the God who inspires — the God who
is behind  book “inspired of God,” no less. Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

EVERYDAY MASS, EVERYDAY SUCCESS

Be eager to present yourself acceptable to God, a workman who causes
no disgrace. – 2 Timothy 2:15

“Do I hear right that you go to church every day?” quipped my boss
during a get-together. “Yes, I do.” I answered hesitantly, wondering
how he got the information. I told him that I need it for my work;
it’s where I get my strength, my wisdom, my guidance and my
protection.
As an IT manager overseas, there are lots of challenges that try my
patience, wisdom and focus. It can be wearisome without the Lord in my
life.
But more than my need for Him, it’s my deep longing for God and my
love for Him that drives me to seek Him each day. The Gospel reading
today says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength”
(Mark 12:30).
As I present myself to Him daily at Mass, I receive His guidance that

God has demonstrated His faithfulness to His people over the past
millennia; it is now our turn to demonstrate our faithfulness and
perseverance in doing His will. Surely God will always be with us —
but will we always stay close to God? Faithfulness does not just
happen. It is a result of the decisions we make. We need to choose God
over and above what the world offers us over and over again.

2 Timothy 2:8-15
8 Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant
of David: such is my Gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, even to the
point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.
10 Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are
chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ
Jesus, together with eternal glory. 11 This saying is trustworthy: If
we have died with him we shall also live with him; 12 if we persevere
we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. 13

humble to justice, he teaches the humble his way. (R) 10 All the paths

G O S P E L

The first three commandments tell us how to love God. The latter seven
instruct us how to deal with our neighbor. Perhaps this distribution
tells us that we are going to struggle more with loving our neighbor
than God. Makes sense to me as I have a lot more neighbors than gods
in my life.

Mark 12:28-34
28 One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first
of all the commandments?” 29 Jesus replied, “The first is this: ‘Hear,
O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! 30 You shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind,
and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love
your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater
than these.” 32 The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are
right in saying, ‘He is One and there is no other than he.’ 33 And ‘to
love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all
your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself’ is worth more
than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that
he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from
the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

A REMINDER TO LOVE

I had an aunt who badgered us with endless reminders all the time. In
the few times I visited her in Canada many years ago, she would pepper
me with repetitive reminders days before I set back for home. Though I
resented her then, I must admit that those reminders eventually
worked. Indeed, as the scholastics used to say, “repetitio mater
studiorum” (repetition is the mother of learning).
The readings today smack of repetition, reminders and rejoinders. In
the same “farewell” letter of Paul to Timothy that we started
reflecting on yesterday, the opening line starts with — you guessed it
right — “remember…” And the solicitous Paul, seemingly unsatisfied
with a simple reminder, insists that Timothy do the same: “Keep
reminding people of these things and charge them before God to stop
disputing about mere words.”  The response after the first reading
actually offers a rejoinder to the solicitous reminder from Paul — a
prayer that “reminds” God, as it were, to keep on “teaching us, His
ways.”
The Gospel speaks of something not altogether unrelated to the same
motif. Echoing what the people of Israel were told in the Old
Testament, the Lord reminds us now about exactly how He can teach us
His ways. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone!” It is for
no other reason than this that the Jews traditionally recite this
prayer, called the Shema, several times in the course of a day.
We are a people with such short memories. We forget events all too
easily. Thank God, we have, as a community of believers, a privileged
moment to bask in glorious memory. We call it liturgy, the official
worship that the Church offers to God. In the liturgy, however, we do
more than just hone our memory skills. We don’t just remember — we do
and celebrate a memorial. And biblical memorial is something that
actualizes, makes present and real —albeit in a sacramental way — what
we celebrate. And what do we celebrate? God’s love and the reminder
for us to love Him in return. Fr. Chito Dimaranan,

Reflection Question:
How do I remind myself of God’s love for me and His presence in my
life every day?

May I always remember, Lord Jesus, that You died on the Cross because
of Your great love for me. Help me to remember to love You in return
by living a life that’s pleasing to You.

A World Health Organization (WHO) report titled “Women and Health:
Today’s Evidence, Tomorrow’s Agenda” reveals that the number of female
smokers is fast increasing. Recognizing the importance of controlling
women’s and girls’ addiction to tobacco, this year’s celebration of
World No-Tobacco Day centers on the theme “Gender and Tobacco with an
Emphasis on Marketing to Women.”

The celebration highlights the need for close to 170 Parties to the
World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco
Control to ban all tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship in
accordance with their constitutions or constitutional principles.

The Convention, which took effect in 2005, expressed alarm over “the
increase in smoking and other forms of tobacco consumption by women
and young girls worldwide.” Although this year’s campaign will focus
on tobacco marketing to women, it will also include the need to
protect boys and men from tobacco companies’ business tactics.

Men and women alike need to be aware of effects of tobacco use and
abuse. They need equal protection from gendered advertising and
marketing schemes and gender-specific tobacco products.

Equally important is protecting them from secondhand smoke and
occupational exposure to tobacco and nicotine.

May 31 every year is celebrated as World No-Tobacco Day to heighten
public awareness of the hazards of tobacco use and abuse, educate the
public on the marketing and business strategies employed by the
tobacco industry, and spread the message about the WHO initiatives for
anti-tobacco campaign.

The day’s activities worldwide will endeavor to promote a healthy
lifestyle among people, especially the young, and introduce ways to
protect future generations from tobacco abuse. Initially observed on
April 7, 1987, as “World No-Smoking Day,” World No-Tobacco Day began
to be celebrated annually on May 31 in 1988, pursuant to World Health
Assembly resolutions.

Let us protect our people, particularly our women and girls, from
being lured by tobacco advertisement and marketing strategies into a
lifetime of nicotine dependence. It is imperative that tobacco control
policies and measures take into consideration gender norms,
differences, and responses to tobacco to reduce tobacco use and arrest
the incidence of tobacco-related diseases and deaths worldwide.

We reiterate the message of WHO Director-General Margaret Chan that
“protecting and promoting the health of women is crucial to health and
development – not only for the citizens of today but also for those of
future generations.”

Let us endeavor to “Make every day World No-Tobacco Day.”
