GREAT UNVEILING
"Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come." –
Matthew 24:42
Before I got spiritually renewed, I found the Mass boring. I only felt compelled
to go because my mother always told me I'd commit mortal sin if I don't. So I
often went but I'd sleep during homily.
Praise God for the Charismatic Renewal and the change in my thinking towards the
Mass. Recently, I re-read the book Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth by
Scott Hahn. In one portion of the book, he wrote, "You can tell them that, yes,
the end is near; yes, the Apocalypse is now. But the Church has always taught
that the end is near — as near as your parish church. And it's something you
should be running to, not from."
To the Jews, apokalypsis describes a part of their week-long wedding activities.
It was the lifting of the veil of a virgin bride. So during Mass, Apocalypse (or
unveiling) happens and Jesus and heaven are unveiled before our eyes.
So not only is there no reason to be afraid of the "apocalypse," there is every
reason to be awake during Mass. Let us remind ourselves of this the next time we
celebrate the Eucharist. Let us wait with bated breath for the great unveiling.
Joy Sosoban (jsosoban@gmail.com)
REFLECTION:
"You can do nothing that can give greater glory to God or be more profitable for
your soul than to hear Mass both frequently and devoutly." (St. Peter Julian
Eymard)
Dear Lord, make me wakeful. Enable me to behold You.

COMPANION
1st READING
This prophecy of Isaiah is incredible. It speaks of a time when there will be no
more war. Does our supposedly Christian society reflect this vision? Does it
seem to be getting closer to this reality or moving further away from it?
Sometimes I find it difficult to know the answers to these questions. Perhaps
the more important question is, "In our own lives do we minister the peace of
Christ to those around us?"
Isaiah 2:1-5
1 This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In
days to come, the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established as the
highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it;
3 many peoples shall come and say "Come, let us climb the LORD's mountain, to
the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may
walk in his paths." For from Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of
the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms
on many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears
into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor
shall they train for war again. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the
light of the LORD!
P S A L M
Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
R: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
1 I rejoiced because they said to me, "We will go up to the house of the LORD."
2 And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. (R) 3 Jerusalem,
built as a city with compact unity. 4 To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the
LORD. (R) According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the
LORD. 5 In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David. (R) 6
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May those who love you prosper! 7 May peace be
within your walls, prosperity in your buildings. (R) 8 Because of my brothers
and friends I will say, "Peace be within you!" 9 Because of the house of the
LORD, our God, I will pray for your good. (R)
2nd READING
The theme of light and darkness is common in the Scriptures. As we begin our
Advent journey towards the celebration of Christ's birth, let us come into the
light of Christ's presence and leave behind us the darkness of our sin. "The
'time' has come," says the apostle Paul. Are you willing to respond to his call?
Romans 13:11-14
11 Brothers and sisters: You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake
from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; 12 the
night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of
darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us conduct ourselves properly as
in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and
licentiousness, not in rivalry and jealousy. 14 But put on the
Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.
G O S P E L
If Jesus were to come again tomorrow, would you be ready to greet Him? Have you
done all that you should to get rid of the sin in your life? If not, why not?
We already know we are called to avoid sin. We do not have any valid excuses for
not being ready when He calls us to Himself.
Matthew 24:37-44
37 Jesus said to his disciples: "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at
the coming of the Son of Man. 38 In those days before the flood, they were
eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah
entered the ark. 39 They did not know until the flood came and carried them all
away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be out
in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left.
41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be
left. 42 Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your
Lord will come. 43 Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the
hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let
his house be broken into. 44 So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour
you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."

SABBATH
Advent: A Time of Active Preparation
There's a story about Colonel Davenport, Speaker of the Connecticut House of
Representatives way back in 1789. One day, while the House was in session, the
sky suddenly grew dark and gloomy. Some representatives looked out the window
and thought it was the end of the world. An uproar erupted with the
representatives calling for immediate adjournment. But Davenport rose and said,
"Gentlemen, the Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is
not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my
duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought." Candles were brought out and
the session continued.
On this first Sunday of Advent, the Church does not yet focus on the birth of
Jesus more than 2,000 years ago. Instead it makes us reflect on the final coming
of Christ at the end of time and how to prepare for it. People make two big
mistakes with regard to the coming of the Lord. One is to prepare for it with
paranoid anxiety. The other is to dismiss it with indifference and do nothing
about it. What does the Gospel tell us about the end of the world and how to
prepare for it?
The Gospel uses two images to make the point. One is the flood which overtook
the unprepared people of Noah's time. The other is the analogy of a thief in the
night, who always comes unannounced. So Jesus urges us to be watchful and ready.
To be watchful and ready does not mean getting overwhelmed by end-of-the-world
prophecies or by multiplying visions of the world's end. Rather it means, as
Colonel Davenport rightly put it, to be more faithful to our duties as children
of God and the world. To be awake, therefore, is to live a life of faithful
service to the Lord, following the Lord's commands and abiding in His grace.
Today, as we begin the new liturgical year, let us resolve to reject the
doomsday paranoia on the one hand and irresponsible complacency on the other.
Let us resolve to live a life of faith and love in service to the Lord so that
we shall be ready to follow Him into the glory of eternity. Fr.
Rudy Horst, SVD
Reflection Question:
Despite the busy days before Christmas, how can I make Advent a time of
reflection and inner spiritual preparation?
Lord, You give us once more this time of Advent to reflect not only on Your
coming into the world, but also on Your final coming into my life at the hour of
death. Help me to live my life in active service to You so that I will be
prepared to meet You.
St. James Thompson, pray for us.

Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars
Make the stars look like they're not shining
Her hair, her hair
Falls perfectly without her trying
She's so beautiful
And I tell her every day
Yeah I know, I know
When I compliment her
She wont believe me
And its so, its so
Sad to think she don't see what I see
But every time she asks me do I look okay
I say
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are
Her nails, her nails
I could kiss them all day if she'd let me
Her laugh, her laugh
She hates but I think its so sexy
She's so beautiful
And I tell her every day
Oh you know, you know, you know
Id never ask you to change
If perfect is what you're searching for
Then just stay the same
So don't even bother asking
If you look okay
You know I say
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are
The way you are
The way you are
Girl you're amazing
Just the way you are
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are
