FRIENDS WITH THE WOLF
"Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves." –Luke 10:3
She bought a new male Czechoslovakian Wolf-Dog for a pet. Every morning, this
woman would pry the dog's jaws open and force a dose of cod liver oil into his
mouth so he could have a healthier and shinier coat. He struggled but she
persisted. He doesn't know what's good for him! she thought.
One day, however, the bottle tipped over. To her surprise, the dog sniffed at
the fishy liquid and began lapping up what had spilled. He actually loved the
stuff. He simply objected to being coerced!
Sometimes we use a similar method in bringing people to the Lord. The "way of
the wolf" — an intense, in-your-face kind of confrontation, rarely works. In our
sincere but overly enthusiastic attempt, we create resistance and repel people.
Wolves are fierce predators. Lambs are excellent friend-makers. Jesus called us
not to be wolves among wolves, but to be lambs among wolves. I thought it was
clear. Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com)
REFLECTION:
Who is God leading you to make friend with?
Shepherd of my Life, let the Spirit of friendship flow through me that I may
make more friends and bring them to Your abundant joy.

COMPANION
1st READING
Luke was, for some time at least, the companion of Paul on his missionary
journeys. If we compare the Last Supper account of Luke with the one in 1
Corinthians, we will find many more similarities with Luke than with either Mark
or Matthew. It also explains where Luke, the supposed author of Acts, got the
vast majority of his material. This text also tells us that Paul encountered all
sorts of difficulties in the course of proclaiming the Gospel. Therefore, take
heart when you encounter them yourselves.
2 Timothy 4:10-17b
10 Beloved: Demas, enamored of the present world, deserted me and went to
Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Luke is the only
one with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is helpful to me in the
ministry. 12 I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak
I left with Carpus in Troas, the papyrus rolls, and especially the parchments.
14 Alexander the coppersmith did me a great deal of harm; the Lord will repay
him according to his deeds. 15 You too be on guard against him, for he has
strongly resisted our preaching. 16 At my first defense no one appeared on my
behalf, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them! 17 But the
Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might
be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it.

Psalm 145:10-11, 12-13, 17-18
R: Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your Kingdom.
10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless
you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might.
(R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all
generations. (R) 17 The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works.
18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth.

G O S P E L
Each of us has our own part to play in God's plan of spreading the Gospel
through the whole world. We cannot leave it up to a zealous few. Each of us must
take responsibility for the part God wants us to perform. None of us are exempt,
because whatever He asks, the Holy Spirit will give us the ability to do. We
have no good excuse for not sharing the Gospel with others.
Luke 10:1-9
1 The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples whom he sent ahead of him in
pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. 2 He said to them, "The
harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest. 3 Go on your way; behold, I am sending you
like lambs among wolves. 4 Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no
one along the way. 5 Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this
household.' 6 If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but
if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in the same house and eat and drink what
is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from
one house to another. 8 Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what
is set before you, 9 cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is
at hand for you.'"

Saints Are Us
Today we honor St. Luke, the Evangelist. He wrote one of the four known Gospels
of Jesus Christ and is also known as the author of the Acts of the Apostles. He
is considered an excellent writer because of his good command of the Hebraic and
Greek languages and his adeptness at those two cultures.
His Gospel is very similar to Matthew's in that they both focus on the anawims
of society — the less fortunate widows, beggars, prisoners, and the sick. They,
who captured God's attention, inspired him to write the Good News. The sending
of the apostles in today's Gospel reading reminds us of our task as Christians.
We are being sent to bring the Good News of salvation to the needy. This task is
also characterized by urgency. Jesus stressed that those He sends should act
with willingness and concern. If there are people who do not readily accept the
Good News, they should not waste time with them. They should go to the next
person or community to give more people the opportunity to hear, understand and
live the Good News of salvation.
The apostles, the prophets, the Gospel writers and the priests are not the only
ones sent. Every Christian, by virtue of their Baptism, has the responsibility
to proclaim the Gospel. The apostles gave us an example that we must imitate.
This is mainly why we remember them and celebrate their feasts. The Mass Preface
for Holy Men and Women states, "You are glorified in your saints, for their
glory is the crowning of your gifts. In their lives on earth You give us an
example." The lives of saints are given emphasis because they did not really
leave us; they continually guide us from heaven. "Through the apostles You watch
over us and protect us always. You made them shepherds of the flock... and from
their place in heaven they guide us still," says the priest in the Preface for
the Apostles. What they achieved, we are also expected to achieve, and we can
achieve them in our own way. God made man holy from the beginning, but we
allowed sin to consume us. But He gives us the grace to recover our original
blessing — by defeating sin and recovering holiness. Thanks for saints like
Luke. We can be like them, too. Fr. Benny Tuazon
Reflection Question:
Do you also see yourself as a saint whom God relies on for the salvation of
many? Do you see the strength you will have from your redeemed weakness?
By Your grace, O God, may we live saintly lives by, first and foremost,
spreading Your Good News.
St. Kevoca, pray for us.
