LITTLE THIEVES
"The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in
great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also
dishonest in great ones." – Luke 16:10
Did you ever steal money when you were a child?
My colleagues and I once talked about stealing coins from our parents when we
were kids. We reminisced about sneaking into our parents' rooms to look for
loose change in their pockets or purses so we could buy a candy, a biscuit or a
soda. We had a good laugh looking back at those days, but then we all realized
that we were little thieves! Loose change or not, it's still called stealing.
What causes us to be dishonest? Maybe it's the fear of being reprimanded for
something wrong we did. Maybe it's the desire for something we can't have and so
we secretly engage in monkey business to get ahead of others. No one would know
anyway. But do we really get away with it? Not really. Because just as we think
no one's looking, Somebody up there sees our secret misdeeds.
Let us strive to be trustworthy at all times and be reminded that to God there
is no light or grave sin. Even the smallest misdeed can never be right. Only

COMPANION
1st READING
Amos is a country boy from a second rate kingdom who dares to speak at the
Temple of God in the north. The people consider him to be an insolent upstart,
and what is more, he has come to call them to repentance and conversion. Why on
earth should they listen to him? The simple answer to all of this is because he
speaks the truth. Truth does not care who you are or where you have come from or
where you are going — it is the same for all.
Amos 8:4-7
4 Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land! 5
"When will the new moon be over," you ask, "that we may sell our grain, and the
sabbath, that we may display the wheat? We will diminish the ephah, add to the
shekel, and fix our scales for cheating! 6 We will buy the lowly man for silver,
and the poor man for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will
sell!" 7 The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing
they have done!

2nd READING
There is only one mediator between God and humanity and His name is Jesus
Christ. We need to remember this when we go looking for the answers in life. We
also need to remember that any understanding of how the saints intervene in our
lives is dependent upon this truth. The saints, Mary included, simply lead us to
Jesus who along with the Spirit has the power to transform our lives.
1 Timothy 2:1-8
1 Beloved: First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and
thanksgivings be offered for everyone, 2 for kings and for all in authority,
that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. 3 This
is good and pleasing to God our savior, 4 who wills everyone to be saved and to
come to knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God. There is also one
mediator between God and the human race, Christ Jesus, himself human, 6 who gave
himself as ransom for all. This was the testimony at the proper time. 7 For this
I was appointed preacher and apostle — I am speaking the truth, I am not lying—,
teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8 It is my wish, then, that in every
place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.
G O S P E L
Life is all about making choices. The rich man in the parable has to choose — to
care for Lazarus or to ignore him. We, too, face this choice often in our lives.
I wonder how we choose? I wonder whether we live in solidarity with the poor,
seeking to help them, or whether we are part of the problem? Let us all examine
our lives closely to see whether or not we act for the poor or against them. It
is probably a mixture of both.
Luke 16:1-13
1 Jesus said to his disciples, "A rich man had a steward who was reported to him
for squandering his property. 2 He summoned him and said, 'What is this I hear
about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer
be my steward.' 3 The steward said to himself, 'What shall I do, now that my
master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to
dig and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed
from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.' 5 He called in his
master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, 'How much do you owe my
master?' 6 He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.' He said to him,
'Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.' 7 Then
to another he said, 'And you, how much do you owe?' He replied, 'One hundred
kors of wheat.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note; write one for
eighty.' 8 And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.
"For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own
generation than are the children of light. 9 I tell you, make friends for
yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed
into eternal dwellings. 10 The person who is trustworthy in very small matters
is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small
matters is also dishonest in great ones. 11 If, therefore, you are not
trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? 12 If
you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is
yours? 13 No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the
other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and
mammon."

Initiative …finishative
Today's parable is about the wise manager. The manager is about to be dismissed
by his master for malpractice. Immediately, he set up a PR strategy to make sure
that people will be sympathetic to him once he is dismissed. So he went and
sought out all of his master's debtors and issued them a half-price discount for
all their debts thereby painting himself as a humanitarian hero of the masses.
In the end of the parable, the manager is praised for his enterprising ways.
Jesus praised the servant in the parable not because of his selfish plan. He was
praised because he had the cleverness to make a plan and, more importantly, to
execute the plan.
There was a man who was a chain smoker. He wanted to change so he gathered
medical journals to educate himself on the evil effects of smoking. After
reading quite a number of medical journals, he immediately made a resolution to
stop reading. The man made a plan but he was not willing to execute it.
Many of us Christians go through life without a master plan like aimless
wanderers. Some are committed to make plans but carrying out the plan is another
matter. But here is the principle: change is not an event, it is a process. It
is not enough that we commit ourselves to an event. We must also commit
ourselves to the process. That is why there is that good business principle that
says, "Plan your work and then work your plan." Planning our work is what we
call initiative. Working our plan is what we can call "finishative" — the will
to finish what we have started.
Have you made plans for your work, for your personal life, for your marriage,
for your spiritual life? That's good, you have initiative. I pray you will also
have the "finishative" to carry them through. Fr. Joel O. Jason

1. Lay down your goals for your life, then make definite action plans to carry
them out.
2. Let us not be just "churchpew" Christians; let us also be "blue jeans"
Christians.
Lord, help me to have the initiative, the resolve and the commitment to improve
my life in all areas.
