Singing for God
"… He called out, 'Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear.'" – Luke 8:8
I thank God for instituting many changes in our company. But the most
significant change was the time when our company president entered the Renewal.
Slowly but surely, he became bolder in sharing God's Word during the regular
company meetings and conferences. His company targets and objectives were drawn
from his Christian knowledge. I, too, became bold such that my presentations
always included biblical quotations as reference.
A change was also introduced in the prayer meeting at the office. From the
traditional "sharing" on how God works in people's lives, people were also asked
to sing Christian songs to give glory and honor to the Lord. Such singing
brought encouragement to the sales people attending the prayer meeting. I have
also sung in those occasions.
For many years now, our company has topped the sales in the group of companies.

1st READING
The resurrection of the dead is all about transformation of the mortal into the
immortal. The body that enters the tomb, in the case of the human person, rises
from the dead to a life of immortality. Jesus makes this possible by being the
first to travel that path. As it is with His baptism, He did not need to have
any sins forgiven as He was sinless; so it is with His resurrection — He did not
need to experience this because He is already immortal in the sense that He is
fully God as well as man.
1 Corinthians 15:35-37, 42-49
35 Brothers and sisters: Someone may say, "How are the dead raised? With what
kind of body will they come back?" 36 You fool! What you sow is not brought to
life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be but a
bare kernel of wheat, perhaps, or of some other kind. 42 So also is the
resurrection of the dead. It is sown corruptible; it is raised incorruptible. 43
It is sown dishonorable; it is raised glorious. It is sown weak; it is raised

G O S P E L
One of the strongest temptations the world uses to distract us from our faith is
busyness. We need to be aware of this so we can work against it. The ancient
Greeks were very aware of the need for solitude and reflection of life and its
mysteries. We need to rediscover this necessity and practice it in our lives.
Let us listen to Socrates for inspiration: The unreflected life is not worth
living.
Luke 8:4-15
4 When a large crowd gathered, with people from one town after another
journeying to Jesus, he spoke in a parable. 5 "A sower went out to sow his seed.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path and was trampled, and the birds of
the sky ate it up. 6 Some seed fell on rocky ground, and when it grew, it
withered for lack of moisture. 7 Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns
grew with it and choked it. 8 And some seed fell on good soil, and when it grew,
it produced fruit a hundredfold." After saying this, he called out, "Whoever has
ears to hear ought to hear." 9 Then his disciples asked him what the meaning of
this parable might be. 10 He answered, "Knowledge of the mysteries of the
kingdom of God has been granted to you; but to the rest, they are made known
through parables so that 'they may look but not see, and hear but not
understand.' 11 "This is the meaning of the parable. The seed is the word of
God. 12 Those on the path are the ones who have heard, but the devil comes and
takes away the word from their hearts that they may not believe and be saved. 13
Those on rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with
joy, but they have no root; they believe only for a time and fall away in time
of trial. 14 As for the seed that fell among thorns, they are the ones who have
heard, but as they go along, they are choked by the anxieties and riches and
pleasures of life, and they fail to produce mature fruit. 15 But as for the seed
that fell on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word,
embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance."

Men and Women of the Word
When I was still a seminarian, I underwent a program called CLAYE (Catholic Lay
Evangelization). It involves house-to-house visitation and sharing of the Word
of God. I was assigned to visit houses at a certain parish. Clutching my Bible,
I visited a house and saw a woman at her front lawn. I greeted her good morning.
The moment she saw me, she immediately went inside her house without saying
anything.
That afternoon, I saw the same woman in the parish church. She recognized me. I
asked her why she did not entertain me. She told me she thought I was a Mormon.
When I asked her why, she told me it was because "you were clutching a Bible."
Why is it that when we see someone with a Bible, we associate him to be anything
but a Catholic? The answer is simple. We have lost our identity as men and women
of the Word. Catholics are no longer known to be people who soak in the Word of
God.
Friends, let me remind you. The Bible is a Catholic document. It was compiled by
Catholics. The Canon of Scriptures was formalized by the Catholic Church. If
there is anyone to be associated with the Bible, it should be Catholics.
Today, Jesus calls us the soil upon which the seed of the Word of God is sown.
Our vocation is to be filled with God's Word. Read the Word of God. Pray the
Word of God. Live the Word of God. Let us recover our identity as men and women

St. Jerome, a Catholic saint who translated the Bible from Greek to Latin, is
known to have said, "Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ." How
well do you know the Scriptures? That will determine how much you know Christ.
Lord Jesus, You feed us with the Word and the Sacraments. Rekindle our passion
for knowing You in Your Word. Amen.
