DIDACHE
GRATEFUL
I do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. – Ephesians
1:16
Several years ago, I learned a cool technique on praying the rosary from Bo
Sanchez. If you dedicate each bead for a person, each Hail Mary and Holy Mary
becomes more meaningful and less likely to be mechanical.
So before moving on to the next bead, I silently mention the name of someone I
want to pray for. By the time I reach the last decade, I'd be mentioning five
people at a time because I'm running out of beads.
When I think of these people, aside from their concerns, I release a sigh of
thanksgiving. For all they've been and done in my life. Then I realize that we
have so much to be grateful for — so many people in our lives to thank God for.
No matter how many times I repeat this process, it's fresh every time.
Wanna give it a try?George Tolentino Gabriel (George.svp@gmail.com)
REFLECTION:
Have you thanked God for the people in your life lately?
Lord, thank You for manifesting Your presence through my loved ones.

COMPANION
1st READING
Where can I start in trying to open up this litany of praise the author, whoever
he may be, has to the Triune God? The first three chapters of the Letter to the
Ephesians seem to be written in some sort of reverie of awe and wonder of the
greatness of God. Let us read it as such and join our praise with that of the
author and just let our spirits soar to the heights of the glory of God.
Ephesians 1:15-23
15 Brothers and sisters: Hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your
love for all the holy ones, 16 I do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering
you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of
him. 18 May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is
the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his
inheritance among the holy ones, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of his
power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might, 20
which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his
right hand in the heavens, 21 far above every principality, authority, power,
and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the
one to come. 22 And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over
all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of the one who
fills all things in every way.

Psalm 8:2-3ab, 4-5, 6-7
R: You have given your Son rule over the works of your hands.
1 [2] O LORD, our Lord, how glorious is your name over all the earth! You have
exalted your majesty above the heavens. 2 [3] Out of the mouths of babes and
sucklings you have fashioned praise because of your foes. (R) 3 [4] When I
behold your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you
set in place — 4 [5] what is man that you should be mindful of him, or the son
of man that you should care for him? (R) 5 [6] You have made him little less
than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 [7] You have given him
rule over the works of your hands, putting all things under his feet. (R)

The Holy Spirit is also a very good guide when trying to discern what things of
the world we should accept and which ones to reject. The Holy Spirit knows the
mind and heart of God intimately and one of His roles is to make it known to us
through the truth. Let us listen to His guidance and heed His word and advice in
all things and not just those that are convenient for us to do so.
Luke 12:8-12
8 Jesus said to his disciples: "I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before
others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. 9 But hoever
denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. 10 "Everyone
who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who
blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 When they take you
before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or
what your defense will be or about what you are to say. 12 For the Holy Spirit
will teach you at that moment what you should say."

SABBATH
The Spirit To Turn To
The beginning of this Gospel talks about acknowledging God. Surely, Jesus is not
saying that God needs recognition from us. God is perfect and full in Himself.
Further, what will the recognition and praise of mere creatures like us do to
God? Nothing. He asks for it for our own good. Truth is, as in thanksgiving, our
acknowledgment of God is for our salvation. When we acknowledge God, we become
more aware of who we are. It humbles us and makes us see our limitations. We
accept our dependence on God, that we need His guiding presence in facing the
challenges of Christian life.
Foremost of these needs is the need for discernment and wisdom. The worst thing
that can happen to any human being is to dissociate himself from God. When one
comes to believe that he can live life by himself without God's assistance, he
commits the greatest blunder. Guidance by the Spirit is necessary. We cannot do
without it. We have sealed our fate when we decide to sever our ties with the
Spirit. This is the essence of Jesus' warning that a denial of the Son of Man
may be forgiven but a blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable. There
was a time when the act of suicide was believed to be what the Gospel is
referring to. There is some truth to that in the sense that killing oneself is a
clear sign of desperation. This state is against the very inspiration of the
Holy Spirit. In such a situation, our only hope is the Holy Spirit. When one
rejects even the very inspiration of the Spirit, change, repentance and hope can
no longer penetrate a person and therefore renders him separated from God. The
rejection of the Spirit is considered blasphemy in the sense that it is a
rejection of God Himself.
This is further elaborated when we are being persecuted. God does not abandon us
during trying times. He promised us the guidance of His Spirit, and this is the
Lord's ultimate point. God will always remain with us. Jesus, Emmanuel (God with
us!), gave us His Spirit to make His presence always felt. It is our
responsibility to always seek the guidance of the Spirit, to heed its promptings
and go where it blows. To do otherwise, much less to completely shut it out,
would be blasphemous!Fr. Benny Tuazon
Reflection Question:
When you are in need of enlightenment, whom do you turn to? Do you appreciate
the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to direct us to goodness?
Come, Holy Spirit, fill my heart and enkindle in me the fire of Your love.
St. Maxima, pray for us.
