DOING GOOD WHILE DOING WELL

Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power to do it

for him. – Proverbs 3:27

"Doing good while doing well" is a principle taught in our Masters in
Entrepreneurship class. It's a corporate social responsibility to share success
with the community, especially with employees. When business is bad, obviously
there is nothing to give back. But when owners can afford an extravagant
lifestyle on their business allowances, their people must, at the very least,
enjoy full benefits and minimum wage.
Knowing I had a ministry- business then, my professor gave me a different
challenge: "Do well while doing good." This was tougher to follow. My struggles
to do both were eased with this prayer:
When business dips and sales are few, O Lord, sustain me. When the BIR comes and

finds non-existent income, O Lord, defend me. When strategies and ideas run dry,

O Lord, inspire me. When opportunities knock and the risk is scary, O Lord,
encourage me. When money is scarce and the SSS and Philhealth checks need to be
signed, O Lord, empower me. When you finally bless us with abundance and loyal
employees need a raise, O Lord, remind me. Lella Santiago

1st READING

The opening line of this reading is more than compelling — it is a command, not
just a suggestion. We should never withhold good from another person if it is in

our power to do it. God tells us that we should always be open to the
possibility of doing good, and if we can do it, then we should.

Proverbs 3:27-34
28 [27] Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power
to do it for him. 29 [28] Say not to your neighbor, "Go, and come again,
tomorrow I will give," when you can give at once. 30 [29] Plot no evil against
your neighbor, against him who lives at peace with you. 31 [30] Quarrel not
with a man without cause, with one who has done you no harm. 32 [31] Envy not
the lawless man and choose none of his ways 33 [32] To the LORD the perverse man

is an abomination, but with the upright is his friendship. 34 [33] The curse of
the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but the dwelling of the just he blesses;

35 [34] when he is dealing with the arrogant, he is stern, but to the humble he
shows kindness.

G O S P E L

The imagery that Jesus uses in this story is quite reasonable and easy to
understand. Applying it to our lives takes a lot more effort as it requires
total commitment to be a living witness to the Gospel both in season and out of
season. The Gospel light ought to be shining through our lives at all times, not

just when we choose to let it shine. Faith, Christianity, loving God — they are
all ways of life, not part-time occupations.

Luke 8:16-18
16 Jesus said to the crowd: "No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel
or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who
enter may see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not become
visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take
care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the
one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away."

my reflections
t h i n k : God tells us that we should always be open to the possibility of
doing good, and if we can do it, then we should.

When you say nothing at all

At the end of every school year, the seminary prepares a program as a tribute to

the seniors who have finished their seminary formation. Some of them will be
ordained, some will opt to take a break prior to ordination, and some will
decide to discern continuously for maybe other options in life.
When it's time to say thanks to the seminary priest formators, there is one
thing I notice in the thanksgiving speeches they give. It would usually run
something like this: " I thank Father for being a cojourneyer." "I thank the
fathers for the times they ate, played and prayed with us." "I thank Father for
showing us how to be a priest of Jesus Christ."
What do those words indicate? It seems to me that seminarians remember not so
much what we said in our homilies, discussed in our lectures, or developed in
our conferences and recollections. What they remember most, what leaves a deep
imprint is what we did together with them.

Today, Jesus reminds the multitude before Him that they are the light of the
world, a lamp that is lit not to be hidden but to be brought out in the open to
give light and be seen. Besides priests and those in the religious life, all
baptized Christians share in the priesthood of Christ. The Catechism calls this
the "common priesthood" of the baptized. We proclaim the Gospel of Christ not so

much with words as with the conduct of our lives. And by the same token, we
betray Christ's Gospel.

What we say is audible only to several pairs of ears. What we do, however, is
visible to innumerable pairs of eyes. Actions evangelize better than words. A
wise man once said, "What you do speaks so loud, I cannot hear what you say." As

the song goes, "You say it best, when you say nothing at all." Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
In Evangelii Nuntiandi #41, Pope Paul VI wrote: "Modern man listens more
willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it
is because they are witnesses." In what category do you belong to?

Lord Jesus, Your Word is a lamp unto my feet, and light unto my path. Together
with St. Paul I humbly declare, "I am not ashamed of the Gospel." Grant me grace

to live by it. Amen.
